>Richard JeffersonSolid. Reliable. Consistent. For a team with risky picks like Allen Iverson, Gerald Wallace and Josh Smith, it looks like it is a good time to go for some stability. I actually ran into this player at a steakhouse during my last visit to New York City. I guess that is as good a sign as any to pick a player.

Round 5, Pick 12: Richard Jefferson, SF, New Jersey Nets

Raymond FeltonRound 5, Pick 10: Raymond Felton, PG, Charlotte Bobcats

A day before training camp begins for the Charlotte Bobcats, Felton predicted that the team would make the postseason.  Yes, it’s okay if you’re laughing, but for those of you who are, note that Felton says that the Bobcats are going to get that respect.  That gusto and confidence is an intangible you like to hear about from a player on your fantasy basketball team, which is why I’m going with Felton here.  He’s a proven winner, winning an NCAA Championship while at North Carolina and he developed very well as the season progressed, earning his fifth overall draft position amongst a great class of point guards, such as the Utah Jazz’s Deron Williams and the New Orleans Hornets’ Chris Paul, who eventually won the Rookie of the Year award.  However, what if I told you that Felton wasn’t so far off from Paul, overall, when Felton finally started for the Bobcats and got regular burn on the floor?

Don’t laugh because even if Felton’s prediction for his real team doesn’t come true, if you pay attention, it can happen for your team.

Manu GinobiliRound 5, Pick 10: Manu Ginobili, SG, San Antonio Spurs

Fantasy offseasons are all about pegging breakout players from year-to-year.  After a stellar campaign two seasons ago, Manu Ginobili was seen going in the second and early third rounds last season.  This level of draft position left many owners disappointed after there was an unexpected drop in Ginobili’s minutes, to less than 30 a game (27.9).  This decrease in minutes attributed to a decrease across the board in nearly all fantasy categories… for the regular season.

Now, as we look at how Ginobili was used in the postseason, we saw an increase to 35 minutes a game against the Mavericks, including a foul-plagued 27 minute contest.  And how did he respond when given the floor time?

Chris Webber

My most vivid memory of Chris Webber was the infamous time-out. April 5, 1993, it was the Fab 5’s second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championship. Michigan was down by two points to North Carolina with 11 seconds left in the game. Chris Webber got to a loose ball near the sidelines. Two Carolina players converged on Webber immediately. Webber puts his hands together to form a “T” in an attempt to call a time-out. Michigan did not have any time-outs left and in resulted in a technical foul which sealed the game for North Carolina. Not the way you want to end your collegiate career.

Last year, Chris Webber played in 75 games. Do you remember the last time Webber played in 75 games? I don’t. You have to go back to the ‘99-‘00 season. Can he do it again?  Or will he take more “time out” from the floor?

Round 5, Pick 9: Chris Webber, PF, Philadelphia 76ers

Rich HardenAMERICAN LEAGUE

A.L. East: The New York Yankees clinched the division a couple of weeks ago after being in a close matchup with the Boston Red Sox for most of the season.  Thanks to a collapse in the latter end of the season by the Red Sox, the Yankees just kept on winning, thanks for the most part to their batting order, which featured a batting title contender hitting ninth (Robinson Cano).  Yes, ninth.  Pitching-wise, they’ll be missing Randy Johnson, but this team is made to hit and to hit HARD!

A.L. Central: This came down to the last day and thanks to the Tigers losing to the lowly Kansas City Royals today, the Twins, who beat the defending world champion Chicago White Sox today, won the division.  And to the winner comes a matchup with the Oakland Athletics… the loser?  Well, after leading the Central for most of the season, the Tigers losing on the final day now find themselves in a postseason matchup with the aforementioned Yankees and their modern Murderer’s Row.

A.L. West: The Athletics clinched the division less than a week ago and as part of Athletics Nation, I couldn’t have been more happier.  Yes, I’m admitting my allegiance because “In Billy We Trust.”  Now, against the Minnesota Twins, the A’s have a chance to FINALLY make it past the first round!  Not that the Twins will be a cakewalk as they do throw a guy out on the mound named Johan Santana.  However, I personally think a healthy Rich Harden can match up with Santana any day.  Add in Barry Zito and Dan Haren (hopefully he finds his groove and stays consistently good), I like the A’s chances from a pitching standpoint.  Offensively, I’m hoping Frank Thomas can keep thumping the ball and Milton Bradley steps up in the postseason, which would make Billy Beane look MORE of a genius!

A.L. Wild Card: The Detroit Tigers were the story at the beginning and middle of the season as they stormed away in the A.L. Central… but they fizzled down the stretch, succumbing to the surging Twins.  All that work for nothing.  Actually, who knows?  But going up against the Yankees is going to be a tough task, especially since there pitching isn’t as good as it was earlier in the season, especially Jeremy Bonderman and super-rookie Justin Verlander.

DescriptionWith this team starting the season with Elton Brand, Pau Gasol

, Lamar Odom, and Peja Stojakovic, it is time to start building the backcourt. Taking this as a real-time situation, my second round pick will be down and out until the New Year. If this happened to you while doing a messageboard or e-mail draft, hopefully you had enough rounds left to take a reasonable stab at adjusting to Pau’s unfortunately injury.

There are some young point guards with sizzle to their name heading into this year. However, I want to ensure I have a solid core I can rely on. Forced to try and get lucky with the waiver wire to make up for the loss of Gasol, I want as many players on this roster where I can just put them into the lineup and not have to think about them anymore.

Round 5, Pick 8: Richard “Rip” Hamilton, SG, Detroit Pistons

Andre IguodalaAre you a music fan? One of my favourite music memories of recent years is Snoop Dogg being featured in the MTV Icon tribute to Metallica. Working his unique flow to “Sad But True,” this was proof that sometimes the unexpected works out very nicely. Now, I am sure there are a legion of metal-heads out there that found the same performace blasphemous, but to each their own.

Building a basketball team involves finding underrated or underappreciated players and hoping that they fit in well with the core players already on your team. Here is a player who will fit into any fantasy team and make it better. There are still 20 ppg players available, players who are on everyone’s sleeper list, and players who have played in All-Star games. But I think this pick may not be so unexpected, and he should be on everyone’s hot list already.

Round 5, Pick 7: Andre Iguodala, SG/SF, Philadelphia 76ers

Andres Nocioni

Andres Nocioni is the “Argentinean Pitbull.”  He is relentless on defense and fearless in crashing the boards. Case in point in the picture, Nocioni is giving a lesson to the New York Knicks on how to grab a rebound. In fact, I will wager my NYC counterpart that Nocioni will out rebound both Eddy Curry and Channing Frye this year!

Round 5, Pick 6: Andres Nocioni, SF, Chicago Bulls

DescriptionIt was officially announced today that Washington Nationals manager, Frank Robinson, will not return to coach the team next season.  When MLB took ownership of the then Montreal Expos five years ago, Robinson took the reins in the dugout.  His first two seasons (‘02 and ‘03), Robinson led the team to 83-79 records, which was very commendable considering the restrictions of salary and the red tape involved in acquiring players.  The following season in ‘04, the Expos spiraled to a 67-95 record in their last season in Montreal.  Last year, the first in Washington, the Nationals were the talk of baseball during the first half of the season as they had a 50-31 first place record, but a huge drop and disappointment in the second half led the Nationals to finish with an 81-81 record.  This season, the Nats have a 71-89 record with two games to go.  For the third year in a row, they will finish at the bottom of the N.L. East.

Robinson is one of the greatest power hitters in the game with 586 homeruns, which places him sixth on the all-time list.  He was the N.L. Rookie of the Year in 1956, the N.L. Most Valuable Player in 1961, and the A.L. Most Valuable Player in 1966 when he won the Triple Crown, leading the league in batting (.316), homeruns (49), and runs batted in (122).  However, that success as a player did not transfer to his managing career as he owns a below .500 record in the 16+ years he’s been a manager.  However, he did win the 1989 A.L. Manager of the Year while managing the Baltimore Orioles to a 87-75 record.

It’s been 51 years that Robinson has been involved with baseball and it’s sad that the run is over for the 71-year-old Robinson, but he’s put in his time with the sport and the class that he approached the game with will be missed.
