On Tuesday night Felix Hernandez stole the show from the attractions of Ichiro Suzuki and Daisuke “Dice K” Matsuzaka. Although the media hype was surrounding Ichiro facing Matsuzaka, Hernandez was quietly shutting down the Boston Red Sox offense. He went all nine innings, and gave up just one hit while striking out six. Matsuzaka wasn’t nearly as impressive, throwing seven innings, giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out four and giving up one walk.

Despite recent rumors that Kevin Garnett would request a trade to a team that has a better shot at the playoffs, on Tuesday he made clear that those rumors were not valid. Garnett has spent his entire 12 year career with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Although the Big Ticket is out indefinitely with a quad injury, he’s leading the team with 22.4 points per game and an NBA leading 12.8 rebounds per game. Garnett, could have suffered the quad injury due to averaging 39.4 minutes per game; while only 30 years old, KG is NBA-old, playing his 12th season in the league this year.

Much to the chagrin of Kansas head coach Bill Self, forward Julian Wright made the decision Monday to enter the NBA draft, and skip his last two college basketball years. Julian Wright insists that money was not a factor in his decision.
““Money has never been my motivation, It’s not my family’s (motivation). Mostly, just playing and feeling like I’m able to advance my game to the next level. It’s not about the money. I’m just happy and grateful to have the opportunity.”
The former McDonalds all American did not hire an agent, so he would be eligible to return to Kansas before the draft. He’s known for having superior athleticism for a player of his size (6’8 inches tall, 225 pounds). He’s played numerous positions for Kansas, including point guard, small forward, and power forward. Wright’s announcement of entering the NBA draft was fairly unexpected, as he stated numerous times that he wouldn’t enter the NBA draft no matter his performance during his sophomore season.

The 56,227 fans in attendance Monday at the New York Mets home opener feasted on Jimmy Rollins for his comment that the Philadelphia Phillies were the “team to beat.” Despite such strong words Rollins went 0-3 in four at-bats, and committed a crucial error in the eighth inning to keep the bases loaded with just one out. Loud chants of “Jimmy Rollins!” and heavy booing were frequent whether he was at the plate or in the field. A seven run eighth inning would lead to a decisive 11-5 Mets victory.

For the first time in the Atlanta Thrashers’ seven-year history, they have made the NHL playoffs and will play the New York Rangers in round one. Atlanta Thrashers coach Bob Hartley thinks that the playoffs birth for the Thrashers will bring an air of excitement to Atlanta.
“I think we’re going to generate lots of energy in this great city with the playoffs, there are lots of faithful hockey fans who have waited a long time for this, and now we’re going to be able to thank them by giving them the NHL playoffs. That will create an extra buzz for this city and hopefully create new hockey fans.”
