The Ottawa Senators improved to 9-1 against the New Jersey Devils in the brand new Prudential Center last night. Brian Gionta scored the first and only goal of the night for the Devils in the second period. The goal was made on a deflection. The Senators were solid all around on Saturday night, receiving help from Andrej Meszaros, Mike Fisher, Shean Donovan, and Daniel Alfredsson, all of whom scored goals. Goalie Martin Gerber was rock solid, blocking 31 of 32 attempted shots. Devils goalie Martin Brodeur didn’t have such a good night, blocking 23 of 26 attempted shots. This has not been Brodeur’s best season, allowing 26 goals at this point.

Matsuzaka Stroking a 2 Run Single
After having one of the most dominant postseasons in Major League history up until the World Series, the Colorado Rockies find themselves in a new position: Down 3 games, struggling to survive. Last night the Boston Red Sox put another beating on the Rockies, winning 10-5. Dice K Matsuzaka not only went 5.1 innings strong, but contributed with a clutch 2 run single in the 3rd inning, to blow the lead wide open and knock out befuddled Colorado journeyman starter Josh Fogg. Jacoby Ellsbury continued his bid to keep Coco Crisp on the bench, with 4 hits and 2 RBI’s. The Rockies last hope will rest on Aaron Cook’s shoulders, who will do battle with Jon Lester tonight in the possibly final game of the World Series.

Jimmy Rollins puts the Phils ahead
The New York Mets have made enemies out of the formerly last place Philadelphia Phillies. The Phils have taken 7 out of their last 7 games against the pride of Queens, New York. Today the Mets lost 5-3, in a game that dragged on for three hours and 43 minutes. Pedro Martinez took the hill for the Mets, and continued his string of good starts since returning from the disabled list. He threw 6 innings, gave up just one hit and struck out 9. His counterpart, trade deadline acquisition Kyle Lohse was shaky through 5 innings. He threw 112 pitches, just 64 for strikes. Lohse also gave up the only three runs the Mets would score today. So how did the Mets lose this game? Journeyman flame thrower Kane Davis came on to walk 3 batters in a row. One of which, Ruben Gotay, was thrown out stealing second. And with MVP candidate David Wright at the dish with runners on first and second, Jose Reyes got greedy and was thrown out attempting to steal third. So Davis walked three batters in his scoreless frame and retired just one hitter. Go figure. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel used 5 relievers, none of whom gave up a run. The Mets bullpen would give up 4 runs overall. Primarily at fault for the loss are Carlos Beltran, who misplayed a Jimmy Rollins triple allowing 2 runs to cross the dish, and manager Willie Randolph for trying to etch an extra inning out of tired reliever Pedro Feliciano, who threw a meatball to Aaron Rowand that would go for a solo shot.

Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers
At this very moment, the Chicago Cubs are leading their division. However, that could all change tomorrow. For the Milwaukee brewers are right behind them by half a game. And its not between those two teams either, because the St. Louis Cardinals have seemingly remembered how to play baseball, and are now only four games back in the division. Every game matters for these three teams in arguably the most exciting division in baseball.

Garrett Atkins and Kaz Matsui both go 3-5 from the plate as the Rockies beat the Red Sox 7-1, giving Josh Beckett his first loss since September 27, 2006. Atkins hit a grand slam in the third inning, which gave the Rockies a 5-0 lead and Atkins his fifth homer on the season; he also had a single and a double.

Last season, Atkins hit .329 with 29 homeruns. So far this year, he’s been struggling, and Rockies fans have been questioning whether or not Atkins was worth playing. So far in June, however, Atkins has had a resurgence, batting .342 (13-for-38) and knocking out two home runs, five doubles, and nine RBIs in 11 games, bringing his season average to .242.

Fred Lewis
San Francisco Giants rookie Fred Lewis hit for the cycle on Sunday in a game against the Colorado Rockies. He hit a double in the first inning, in the fourth inning he hit a homerun, a triple in the fifth inning, and he hit a single in the seventh inning to cap off six runs other runs scored that inning. The timing was great for Lewis, who was not only just called up from Triple A four days earlier, but his performance would make for an ideal gift for his mother on mother’s day.

“This was my Mothers Day gift to mom, I called her to tell her I hadn’t gotten her anything - until now.”

Baron Davis after a threeAvery Johnson said all the pressure was on the Warriors. With a game 7 in Dallas looming, there was most assuredly plenty of pressure to be had. But you wouldn’t have known that from watching the Warriors on Thursday night. In their second straight game with a chance to eliminate the Mavs, the Warriors took care of business in the second half and finished off Mark Cuban’s club, 111-86, taking the series in six games.

It’s already been herald as the biggest upset in NBA playoff history. The Warriors were not given a chance in this series by anyone – but that didn’t stop them from becoming only the third eight-seed team to ever eliminate a number one seed in the playoffs, and the first team to accomplish this since the first round turned to a seven game series in 2002.

NBA Champion Miami HeatIn what seemed impossible, the Miami Heat beat the Dallas Mavericks in Game Six of the NBA Finals, 95-92, to claim the franchise’s first championship.  It’s not that the Heat were huge underdogs to win tonight’s game, but in the fact that they won four straight games after going down two games to none at the beginning of the series.

But, before I go any further, I have to give props to the Dallas Mavericks who easily could have been the world champions instead.  The only problem was that they had to defend the Heat’s Dwyane Wade, who was simply off-the-charts the last four games.  In any case, the Mavs will probably sign Jason Terry, who shined during the postseason, and keep this team together to contend the next few seasons.  Kudos to them.

At the opening of tonight’s game, it looked like the Mavs were going to run away with the game early, but thanks to Wade scoring seven points in under two minutes for the Heat, the end of the first quarter wasn’t as bad as it could have been.  In the second quarter, the Heat just continued to pour it on, outscoring the Mavs for the quarter, 26-18 and taking a one point lead into the half.

But, the second half of the game couldn’t have been played any more tightly.

Just give Shaquille O'Neal the ball!NBA FINALS: Everyone is asking - Can Shaquille O’Neal hack it anymore?  Naturally, coming off a five point performance will have people questioning Shaq’s ability, but C’MON!  This is Shaq we’re talking about here.  Is he dominating like he did in seasons past?  Of course not.  But, he’s still a force in the blocks and considering he only took five total shots from the field, someone needs to remind him.  Well, I know this much, you can question O’Neal’s ability all you want because essentially, I think we all know better.  But, once you start questioning his heart, the big lug has too much pride to not get the last laugh.

*Game Three happens down in the sunny shores and beautiful views (models and all) of Miami.  This is a critical game for the Heat because a Boston Red Sox style comeback from a 3-0 deficit is a rare thing.  It’s as rare as Rachel McAdams going out on a date with me… maybe, just maybe if I can get her inebriated enough, she’ll say yes.  Of course, when sobriety kicks in, she’ll have no idea, but at least I’d know.  ANYWAY, the Heat cannot afford to lose because the Dallas Mavericks would have all the momentum going in their favor.  Excuse me, even more momentum in their favor.  It seems like they can’t miss.  The Heat need to put a stop to that and feeding O’Neal down in the post seems to be a good remedy to get it started.

MLB: Is Roger Clemens kidding?  In six innings of work, the Rocket only allowed two hits and struck out 11 in his second rehab start with the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks.  Unreal.  Clemens is on schedule to make his MLB debut on June 22 against the Minnesota Twins.

*Two of the hottest teams right now (both winning eight of their last 10 games) are the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners, A.L. West rivals and combatants that start a three game set tonight in Oak-Town.  Since the A.L. West always ends up being a close race down to the end, this series could be an important one for both clubs in determining their fates.  Jamie Moyer takes the hill for the Mariners, while Joe Blanton takes the mound for the A’s.

*The old-timers, Tom Glavine of the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox’s Curt Schilling go for their tenth wins tonight and continue to lead their respective leagues in wins.  Glavine will deal to the potentially dangerous Philadelphia Phillies batting order in Philly and Schilling faces the Minnesota Twinkies led by the hot-hitting Joe Mauer.  Will experience win and youth be served?  Or will the youngsters make Glavine and Schilling look like old men.

*Speaking of youth, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim’s Jered Weaver makes his fourth start, looking to stay undefeated and go 4-0.  Weaver has been every bit as good as most people projected him to be with a 3-0 record, 1.86 ERA, .162 BAA, 17 K versus 3 BB in 19.1 IP.  There’s a very good possibility the young Weaver will bump the old weaver, older brother Jeff, from the Angels’ rotation when ace Bartolo Colon comes off the DL.  I hope Jeff likes the bullpen.

Enjoy the games!

Maradona in Argentina's heydayGroup C: This is a strong grouping here in Hamburg with Argentina, Ivory Coast, The Netherlands, and Serbia-Montenegro.  In fact, it’s arguably one of the more difficult ones, in the World Cup.  Argentina came into the tournament having won twice, last time in 1986 with the legendary Diego Maradona, but this is a very young team that is on its way up.

This was a very well-played match with Argentina coming out on top, thanks to goals from Hernan Crespo and Javier Soviola in the first half of the matchup.  Didier Drogba scored the lone goal for the Ivory Coast in the 82nd minute of the game, but by then, it was too late.
