New York had one successful hockey team tonight, the New York Rangers. They defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3, thanks to goals from Jaromir Jagr, Nigel Dawes, Brandon Dubinsky, and center Sean Avery. Goalie Henrik Lundqvist blocked 26 out of 29 attempted shots. The goals from Buffalo came from Ales Kotalik (who scored twice), and Jason Pominville.
“There’s no point to look at the standings. It’ll change every night” said Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. “The only thing we can do is focus on our job and win as many games as possible. … But it always feels good to win games like this.”

Martin Brodeur Shines As Devils Beat Islanders

The New York Islanders were on a 6 game winning streak entering Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Devils. However Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils were having no part of being victims of game number 7.
Zach Parise, John Madden, Brian Gionta, and Patrick Elias all scored goals in a 4-2 victory over the Islanders. Goalie Martin Brodeur stopped 19 of 21 attempted shots.
“We didn’t give them a chance to try to do something against us,” Brodeur said. “It was really about us — that we wanted to play well.”

Miroslav Satan Helps Islanders To 6 Straight

The New York Islanders have now won 6 consecutive games, the latest being a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The game was tied at 0 until the third period when Miroslav Satan scored a goal on Lightning goalie Karri Ramo. Satan’s effort earned him the 2nd star of the game honors, the first star going to Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro who stopped all 32 shots on net tonight. Satan’s goal was his 14th on the season.

The New York Islanders aren’t quite finished yet in 2008. Last night the Isles won their 4th consecutive game, a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Through 2 periods, the Sharks were winning 2-0 on goals from Joe Thornton and Marcel Goc. However the Islanders picked up their play in the third period, scoring 3 goals from Andy Hilbert, Mike Comrie and defenseman Freddy Meyer. The goal was Meyer’s 2nd goal of the year, the first one being an empty-netter.
“I was just trying to put it on net,” Meyer said. “Get the monkey off my back? I’m just going to try to keep shooting the puck. It was good, anytime you beat a goalie, it’s always a little sweeter.”

Thanks in part to 5 3-pointers from Boston Celtic Ray Allen, the East Coast prevailed in the 2008 NBA All Star Game in New Orleans. Dwight Howard scored 16 points and Lebron James had 27 buckets to help out in the winning effort. Missing from the West Coast lineup was Kobe Bryant, who because of an injury was limited to playing just 2 minutes in the first quarter.
East Coast point guard Jason Kidd scored just one basket but dealt out 10 assists, in possibly his last game associated with the New Jersey Nets organization. News was revealed before the game that his trade to the Dallas Mavericks was nearly completed.

Islanders Defeat Thrashers For Third Straight Victory

The New York Islanders are crawling their way back into the Atlantic Division, one game at a time.
Last night the Islanders beat the Atlanta Thrashers 4-1, thanks in help to goals from Ruslan Fedotenko, Miroslav Satan, Sean Bergenheim, and Defenseman Marc-Andre-Bergeron. The difference between attempted shots between both teams is astounding- The Islanders attempted 49 shots against Thrashers goalie Kari Lehtonen, while the Thrashers attempted just 10. The defense tonight, headed by Radek Martinek, certainly played to their potential last night at Nassau Coliseum.

While the New York Rangers didn’t exactly have timing on their side (Playing a game on the same night as Superbowl 42) they had everything else tonight. They defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-3, thanks to goals coming from Chris Gomez and Chris Drury. With the victory, the Rangers are 27-22, and 4th place in the Atlantic Division. The Rangers have now won three straight games, and are building momentum, according to Rangers coach Tom Renney.
“This was a huge character win,” Rangers coach Tom Renney said. “If anything punctuates our last three games, this is it. If anything punctuates the character of our team, this is it, but every time we go to the rink moving forward it’s going to check our character and we have to make sure that we use this as a reference point. It’s our job to make sure this is a turning point in our season. It’s that simple.”

The New York giants won the Superbowl over the New England Patriots, by a score of 17-14. This victory for the Giants ends the Patriot’s perfect season. Late in the 4th quarter the Patriots’ Daunte Stallworth dropped a pass from Giants’ Eli Manning, an interception which would have likely dashed the Giants’ Superbowl hopes. Shortly thereafter Tom Brady found Plaxico Burress in the end zone to complete a touchdown making the game 16-14.

The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 11-269 tonight. The high scorer of the game was Andre Iguodala, scoring 18 points in 34 minutes of action. The 76ers hadn’t won a game by such a wide margin in 12 years.
With the victory the 76ers are in 4th place in the Atlantic Standings, and the Bucks remain in last place in the Central Standings.

East Defeats West in NHL All Star Game

In the 2008 NHL All Star Game the Eastern coast defeated the Western Coast, by a score of 8-7. The goals from the East Coast were scored by Eric Staal, Andrei Markov, Alex Ovechkin, Brian Campbell, Marian Hossa, and Marc Savard. The NHL All Star Game MVP was Eric Staal, a well earned achievement. Staal scored 2 goals with an assist and 4 shots on goal. Rick Nash had a hat trick for the West Coast with 7 shots on goal.
“I was saying to the guys on the ice if I do give it to my parents, I would sure be the favorite of the family for at least a little while,” Staal said after the game.
