LeBron James New Jersey Nets win streakNew Jersey Nets win streak meet LeBron James.  He’s a pretty good baller, isn’t he?  The Nets came into their matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers on a franchise-high (tie) 14 game winning streak, which is not a bad way going into the playoffs that start in a couple of weeks.  However, any plans for 15 consecutive wins were derailed by a surging Cavs team that won 9 of their last 10 games and recently clinched a playoff spot themselves.  And have I mentioned that that LeBron guy is pretty good?  Going into the fourth quarter, the Nets were leading the Cavs 78-72, but then that LeBron person decided to score 18 of his 37 points in the final quarter, effectively putting his team on his back for a 108-102 victory.  Yeah… that LeBron guy is pretty good.  Don’t be surprised if these two teams meet again during the playoffs because they’re both peaking at the right time.

DescriptionDescriptionTwo of the better rookie pitchers from the 2005 MLB season matched up on Friday night at Safeco Field.  Pitching phenom, “King” Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners played host to the Oakland Athletics and opposing pitcher, Joe Blanton.  This matchup of very good young pitchers did not disappoint as King Felix went five innings, giving up a paltry two hits and one run while walking and striking out four.  Due to a strict pitch count for the youngster, Hernandez did not go further than the fifth inning after which he totaled 100 pitches.  Blanton however, not only pitched three more innings, but he threw less total pitches.  Blanton went eight frames, throwing a total of 98 pitches, giving up only two hits, one walk, and six punchouts.  The Athletics won the game 5-0 as Hernandez’ replacement, Julio Mateo gave up four earned runs in 2.1 IP.  Look for this matchup between the youngsters to continue in the next few seasons, which is only enhanced by the fact that the A’s and Mariners are in the same division.

Bruce Bowen and Ray Allen feudingLast year in the playoffs, the San Antonio Spurs were given a tough fight from the surprising Seattle SuperSonics in the second round on their way to the 2005 championship.  San Antonio’s top defender Bruce Bowen had the assignment of guarding All-Star Ray Allen.  Allen went as far to call Bowen’s defense of flopping and dirty plays “sissy basketball.”  Last night the Sonics and Spurs faced off again, and the feud escalated.  As Bowen drew an offensive foul on Allen, both players fell to the floor, where Bowen gave Allen an extra kick to Allen’s back.  Allen got the last laugh for the night as he hit a three point shot in the closing seconds to give the Sonics a close win over the Spurs 106-102.

DescriptionPittsburgh’s running game turned out to be too much for Seattle in the final minutes of the 4th quarter.  Bettis and company burned the clock and the Seahawks’ timeouts in their final drive.  Seattle made a desperate attempt to tie in the end, but it was futile. There may have been some questionable calls, but no matter how many times you argue them, the Steelers are the Super Bowl Champions of 2006.

Hassleback’s INT turned into a Pittsburgh touchdown after WR Randall El threw on a gadget play.  The ball sailed for a 43 yard pass to Hines Ward.  Hassleback fumbled on the ensuing possession only to have the call overturned on a challenge.  The overturned play turned out to be a bust anyhow with Seattle having to punt after a Pittsburgh sack.

Current Score: Seattle 10, Steelers 21.

CB Kelly Henderson came up big in the endzone for Seattle by intercepting a pass that would’ve likely been a Pittsburg touchdown for WR Cedrick Wilson.  Instead, Henderson takes the INT for 76 yards before getting tackled - a Super Bowl record.  On the ensuing set of plays - 3rd and 6 - Matt Hasselbeck hit up Jerramy Stevens for a 16 yard touchdown reception.

Current Score: Seattle 10, Steelers 14.

Willie Parker took it to the house with a Super Bowl record setting 75 yard run.  The Seahawks put up a healthy drive and attempted another FG - this time for 50 yards.  Josh Brown missed another key scoring opportunity for the Seahawks.

Current Score: Seattle 3, Steelers 14.

On 3rd down, Big Ben connected with Hines Ward for a big 37 yard reception that set up a 1 yard touchdown run by Ben Roethlisberger.  The play was challenged by Seattle, but was it was too close to overturn the call.  That took us under the 2 minute warning.  Seattle’s 2 minute offense came into effect and ended with what I consider to be a conservative FG attempt.  Pittsburg accidentally called a timeout with a confused defense on the field; Seattle failed to capitalize with 7 seconds on the clock.  I thought there might have been time to attempt one shot down the field or at least relieve some pressure off the kicker by taking it in another 10-15 yards, then call a their last timeout.  However, they opted to attempt a 54 yard FG that went wide.  Bring on Mick Jagger.

Mark Cuban celebrating a winBelieve or not, the Dallas Mavericks are getting it done with some defense.  In their last 10 games, opponents have all scored under 100 points.  With their winning streak they have tied themselves for the Southwest division and Western Conference lead. Last night’s game versus the Grizzlies they were able to sneak out a victory by Dirk Nowitzki getting a superstar call and went to the line to put them up by one.  Mike Miller of the Grizzlies could have won the game at the buzzer but his lay-up shot missed when he lost the handle of the ball for a split second.  Owner Mark Cuban definitely has been a happy camper lately.

That is an amazing accomplishment, by Epiphanny Prince of Murry Bergtraum High School in New York City.  Just like her namesake, it might have been divine intervention that allowed her to see the basket so clearly.  Epiphanny broke the high school girls record previously held by Cheryl Miller, famous sister of NBA star Reggie Miller, by scoring an unbelievable 113 points.  Cheryl once scored 105 points as a high schooler in California.

The final score ended up being 137-32 victory over Brandeis High School.  Now critics must ask the question how many assists did Epiphanny had, because they sure asked Kobe that question.  Good grief, how bad of a team Brandeis must be, why didn’t they just quadruple team this girl?
