By defeating the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, April 9th, the Dallas Mavericks clinched the best record in the NBA. With five games still to go in the regular season, Jerry Stackhouse and Dirk Nowitzki, the scoring leaders for the Mavs on Monday night have already been told not to go to the final five games. “I told them if I see them on the plane, I’ll fine them,” Dallas head coach Avery Johnson said.

Atlanta Thrashers Set To Make NHL Playoffs Debut

For the first time in the Atlanta Thrashers’ seven-year history, they have made the NHL playoffs and will play the New York Rangers in round one. Atlanta Thrashers coach Bob Hartley thinks that the playoffs birth for the Thrashers will bring an air of excitement to Atlanta.
“I think we’re going to generate lots of energy in this great city with the playoffs, there are lots of faithful hockey fans who have waited a long time for this, and now we’re going to be able to thank them by giving them the NHL playoffs. That will create an extra buzz for this city and hopefully create new hockey fans.”

Detroit Tigers On The Move To The World Series
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: MLB, News, Playoffs,
After starting off the regular season strong, the Detroit Tigers lost the wind from their sails in the last couple of months of the season, eventually losing the A.L. Central crown to the Minnesota Twins. But you know what they say about the postseason - it’s a new season all over again and no one has been better than the Detroit Tigers in this “second” season. And now, they’re on their way to the biggest series in baseball - The World Series.

The St. Louis Cardinals Make it to the NLCS
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: MLB, News, Playoffs,
The St. Louis Cardinals stumbled into the playoffs, almost not making the postseason at all as the surging Houston Astros made the N.L. Central very interesting. But, despite the a finish to the regular season beign thisclose, the Cardinals stepped up their game in the National League Division Series against the N.L. West champion San Diego Padres.
They took the series three games to one, surprisingly thanks to their pitching which was considered mediocre as a staff and not having as much depth as the Padres did. Okay, let’s be serious, it was really thanks to Chris Carpenter, a Cy Young candidate. Carpenter won two of the three games that sent the Cardinals to the National League Championship Series against the strong New York Mets club that swept the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Game One between the Cards and the Mets starts on Wednesday at Shea Stadium at 8PM EST. The Cards will throw Jeff Weaver on the hill, while the Mets will start their ace, especially with Pedro Martinez injured, Tom Glavine.
Detroit Tigers Upset the New York Yankees and Continue On

The Detroit Tigers pulled an upset, taking the ALDS against the New York Yankees, three games to one. Another thing they did with the win was prove that money does not, in fact, buy you everything. And it was the Tigers pitching that quieted the mighty Yankees lineup, a staff that lost its effectiveness in the second half of the season after such a stellar start. Jeremy Bonderman pitched a gem to clinch the series for the Tigers, going 8.1 innings and only giving up two runs.
This following another a great pitching performance by Kenny Rogers in Game Three, dealing 7.2 innings without surrending a run. But, it all started with rookie Justin Verlander in Game Two doing just enough to help the Tigers tie the series and split the games at Yankees Stadium. So, after a collapse and losing its grip on the A.L. Central in the last day of the season, the Tigers find validation in beating the Yankees modern-day Murderer’s Row of a batting order. Kudos to manager Jim Leyland, who should win the A.L. Manager Year of Award.
The Tigers move on to face my Oakland A’s (yes, from now on, I’ll be a homer, going against journalistic decorum) with the first game being played on Tuesday at 5pm PST at the Athletic’s McAfee Coliseum.
There are many happy people in Metsland right now, especially for those that HATE the New York Yankees. While the Mets moved on to the next round of playoff series, the Yankees failed to achieve that goal. There will be a Subway Series no more. The Mets completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers last night, reaching the National League Championship series and will face the winner of the San Diego Padres/St. Louis Cardinal series. The Mets lineup, unlike their crosstown counterparts, came up big and scored enough runs to dash any hope the Dodgers faithful may have had in advancing.
Before the series, the Mets learned that they would be without their ace, Pedro Martinez, not just for the playoffs, but not until after the All-Star break sometime next season. That had a lot of Mets fans in a tizzy and regressing to their well-known pessimism (I’m a New Yorker, born and raised in Queens with TONS of Mets fan friends, so I know). The further news of losing Orlando Hernandez made the fans feel worse, or at least in denial. However, despite those key injuries, it was their bread and butter - the batters - that allayed all fears.
The Mets are still in the hunt for a World Series… and the Yankees are not. The hardcore Mets fan (such as my very good friend, Chris Sannella who lives in Yankees country) can sit back, wait for the next game and thumb their nose at all the Yankees fans that gave them hell. Go get ‘em!
To quote a favorite Met from decades ago, “Ya Gotta Believe!”
On a Friday afternoon, the Oakland Athletics finally did it. After going 0-9 in games in which they could have concluded a playoff series and move on to the next round, the Oakland Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins 8-3, completing a three-game sweep. Many favored the Minnesota Twins as they had the advantage in every way, other than pitching depth past Johan Santana. After beating Santana in Game One at Minnesota, the odds of the A’s winning series got a whole lot better as Santana was the true litmus test of how the series would go, as he is the most dominant pitcher in the game today. However, Barry Zito showed why he won the Cy Young just a few years ago and led the A’s to a 3-2 Game One win.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
A.L. East: The New York Yankees clinched the division a couple of weeks ago after being in a close matchup with the Boston Red Sox for most of the season. Thanks to a collapse in the latter end of the season by the Red Sox, the Yankees just kept on winning, thanks for the most part to their batting order, which featured a batting title contender hitting ninth (Robinson Cano). Yes, ninth. Pitching-wise, they’ll be missing Randy Johnson, but this team is made to hit and to hit HARD!
A.L. Central: This came down to the last day and thanks to the Tigers losing to the lowly Kansas City Royals today, the Twins, who beat the defending world champion Chicago White Sox today, won the division. And to the winner comes a matchup with the Oakland Athletics… the loser? Well, after leading the Central for most of the season, the Tigers losing on the final day now find themselves in a postseason matchup with the aforementioned Yankees and their modern Murderer’s Row.
A.L. West: The Athletics clinched the division less than a week ago and as part of Athletics Nation, I couldn’t have been more happier. Yes, I’m admitting my allegiance because “In Billy We Trust.” Now, against the Minnesota Twins, the A’s have a chance to FINALLY make it past the first round! Not that the Twins will be a cakewalk as they do throw a guy out on the mound named Johan Santana. However, I personally think a healthy Rich Harden can match up with Santana any day. Add in Barry Zito and Dan Haren (hopefully he finds his groove and stays consistently good), I like the A’s chances from a pitching standpoint. Offensively, I’m hoping Frank Thomas can keep thumping the ball and Milton Bradley steps up in the postseason, which would make Billy Beane look MORE of a genius!
A.L. Wild Card: The Detroit Tigers were the story at the beginning and middle of the season as they stormed away in the A.L. Central… but they fizzled down the stretch, succumbing to the surging Twins. All that work for nothing. Actually, who knows? But going up against the Yankees is going to be a tough task, especially since there pitching isn’t as good as it was earlier in the season, especially Jeremy Bonderman and super-rookie Justin Verlander.
