Hand gestures and hits from behind worth equal suspensions

Colin Campbell was busy on Tuesday, handing out a number of suspensions. Among the hit list was James Wisniewski of the Islanders for his obscene gesture towards Sean Avery, as well as Niklas Hjalmarsson on Chicago for his blind hit from behind against Jason Pominville, which resulted in Pominville's being carried off the ice on a stretcher. Both Wisniewski and Hjalmarsson were suspended for a pair of games for their individual and fundamentally different rule infractions.

The Carolina Hurricanes may put in a request to play all of their games in Finland. The ‘Canes won their second game in Helsinki in as many tries – and as many games this season – with a 2-1 shootout victory over the Minnesota Wild. Last year, Carolina only won two of their first 18 games; which was directly responsible for their finishing with just 80 points. By November 13 of last season, the Hurricanes had eight points total.

Guillaume Latendresse scores the first goal of the 2010-11 NHL season

The NHL season does not start with the first drop of the puck; it starts with the first puck in the net. Minnesota’s Guillaume Latendresse had the honors of kicking off 2010 when he netted a wrist shot over Carolina’s Cam Ward at 3:33 of the first period in their game in Helsinki, Finland. Although the goal came in a 4-3 losing effort, it served as official notice that the talk is over; hockey is back.

Darcy Tucker won’t be playing in the NHL this year; or ever again. After a 15-year career with Montreal, Tampa Bay, Toronto and Colorado, Tucker has announced his retirement after a summer of shopping himself around that ultimately ended without him finding a city willing to pay the money he felt he deserved. In a league where many teams are looking for young talents or fighting salary cap issues, Tucker is an odd man out.

Nick Foligno and Peter Regin battling for top-six job with Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators are looking to build upon a 94-point season last year that resulted in a first-round exit, and part of that is deciding who their top-six forwards will be. They have five. The last spot has been a tough battle between Nick Foligno and Peter Regin. They’re competing for the left-winger job beside Mike Fisher and Alex Kovalev. While Regin was the popular choice before the pre-season began, Foligno has made a strong case and may snipe the job away from Regin.

Islanders’ Mark Streit gone with shoulder injury

Mark Streit’s season may be over before it started. The Islanders’ defenseman will likely miss six months after injuring his shoulder during an intrasquad game after being hit by Matt Moulson and falling into the boards. Streit will undergo surgery to repair what initially appears to be a torn labrum and torn rotator cuff, but he may also have suffered a dislocation. The Islanders will have to scramble to find somebody who can fill Streit’s skates and hopefully do at least half the job that he did.

When the NHL started its “Winter Classic” tradition a few years ago, it received a lot of praise for coming up with a style of game that embraced its roots and actually generated some interest in hockey from those who normally wouldn’t dare ever watch the ice-bound sport. This year, they’re hoping to build on its success by pitting the game’s two biggest players – Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin – against each other. Also, they’ve tapped HBO to create a reality series documenting the road leading up to January’s outdoor game.

The NHL preseason began last night with nine games on the schedule, but we’re still a couple of weeks away from actual hockey. To those who paid attention, they saw a number of guys they’ve never seen before, and the names that they did recognize they may not see again for a number of days. Many of the players will be fortunate (or unfortunate) to play as many as half of their preseason games, and the fans are the ones who will suffer for it.

Eric Belanger slammed by Washington Capitals

Eric Belanger’s offseason wasn’t the typical team shopping that most free agents experience. Belanger signed a deal with the Phoenix Coyotes, but that came after a deal that was more than done fell through with the Washington Capitals. Belanger became the victim of the free agent game and in the end chose to walk away from the organization. But was it the right move for he and his agent to make this situation a public one?

Tomas Kaberle back with the Toronto Maple Leafs after summer of nothing

The Maple Leafs’ defenseman Tomas Kaberle and coach Ron Wilson say they like each other. Every other indication is that they don’t. Kaberle arrived back in Toronto for training camp and was immediately questioned by the media about the situation. This has been a continuous story older than the Kovalchuk contract, but it’s almost at the point where we can see if actions truly speak louder than words when these two interact with each other when the season begins.
