Phil Kessel speaks out against coach Ron Wilson

Phil Kessel, the famously-anointed “chosen one” of the Maple Leafs organization seems to have had enough of it. At a practice in Toronto on Sunday, Kessel told reporters that that he and coach Ron Wilson “don’t really talk” and that it “might not be working out here.” Probably sensing that he had backed himself into a corner, he failed to elaborate on the comments. Could the shy forward’s patience with his team’s management have finally found its limits?

Rick DiPietro out again with busted face

Whenever it seems like things could not get worse for the New York Islanders, things get worse for the New York Islanders. The latest blow came on Friday when the team announced that top goaltender Rick DiPietro is going to miss the next four-to-six weeks. This occurred after DiPietro got into a fight with Penguins goalie Brent Johnson, or more accurately, he got into a punch. Johnson skated the length of the ice, threw one left hook and DiPietro was finished.

Nobody cared about who would go first. Few more care about whether the Sedin’s would be split up. What everybody wanting to know going into the NHL All-Star Draft was who would be left sitting alone on the floor before being the final “pick” of the draft. The inaugural honors went to Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The humiliation of the title is being abated by a $20,000 donation to charity in his name and a new car for the Leafs’ forward.

The National Hockey League is making a noticeable effort to grow its brand. We’ve seen it in the Winter Classic, the HBO special and even in their die-hard refusal to admit there’s anything wrong with any of the teams along the Sunbelt. Another part of that growth involves this year’s All-Star Game. After taking a year off due to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the NHL has made some changes to the lineup of festivities.

The New York Islanders are a mess in many ways and will continue to be messy for years to come. They have a terrible record this season, consistently picked in the top spots in the draft in previous years and still have few players they can boast as “elite.” One positive they have is a core of young players who look like they’ll develop into above-average NHL players who can help reshape the direction of the franchise. One of those players is forward Josh Bailey.

Tom Kostopousos receives six games, Brad Stuart receives six weeks

When Calgary’s Tom Kostopoulos hit Detroit’s Brad Stuart in the head during a game last week, NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell came down quickly with a six-game suspension. Whether you think six games is too few considering Stuart will be gone six weeks is open to debate, but you have to give the NHL credit for at least recognizing the growing concern and danger surrounding head hits and attempting to abate them. Whether that’s working or not is a different matter.

Jonas Hiller stopped 37 shots on Sunday, lifting his Anaheim Ducks to a 1-0 victory and getting a second straight shutout in the process. Among his 37 stops included a few gems that may make this season’s goaltenders’ highlight reel. For Hiller, it was just another day between the pipes. With 21 wins this season, Hiller has silently been of the best goaltenders playing. Only Detroit Red Wings' Jimmy Howard has more wins, and he’s playing in front of a much better team.

Highs and lows halfway through the NHL season

We’re roughly halfway into the NHL season (the first group of all stars were announced, so it’s fair), which makes it time to take a look at the best and the worst in the league to this point. Who has performed above and below expectations, and who has remained par for the course so far? You have the usual suspects atop the standings, whether it’s Sidney Crosby or his Penguins, but where is Tampa Bay right now if not for Steven Stamkos?

There’s nothing quite like a Canada/U.S. hockey game. This year’s World Junior tournament pitted the two hockey superpowers’ babies against each other in a rematch of last year’s gold medal game, in which the Americans stole top honors in foreign Canada, breaking the hearts – and five year winning streak – of the Canadians. This year in Buffalo, the revenge was cold and strong, albeit one game too early as Canada knocked off the U.S. 4-1 in the semi-final game on Monday night.

Washington Capitals win Winter Classic; real hockey returns

Saturday night’s Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic was anything but that in every sense. The winter snow was replaced by a spring rain, an exclusive daytime affair was delayed to become one of seven concurrent games, and the Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry was nowhere to be found. Still, 68,111 marched in to Heinz Field and saw their hometown Penguins slosh their way to a 3-1 loss in a game where all hype and momentum leading up to it would have suggested a very opposite score.
