Toronto Maple Leafs’ quest for a number one goalie
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
Now that the Toronto Maple Leafs mercifully have been officially taken themselves out of playoff contention, the members of Leafs Nation have begun asking who they will turn to in goal for the 2011-12 season. After beginning the season with veteran J.S. Giguere and supposed-goalie-of-the-future Jonas Gustavsson, the Leafs found themselves playing behind most teams thanks to miserable netminding. With continued injuries to Giguere’s groin and Gustavsson’s heart, the Leafs looked way down the depth chart and brought up James Reimer.

Marty Turco allegedly wagers with fan during game
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,
Despite not having played in a game since March 17, Chicago Blackhawks goalie Marty Turco is making headlines. Turco is under investigation for allegedly wagering on Tuesday night’s Blackhawks game against the Montreal Canadiens while on the bench. A Habs fan called into a Montreal-based radio show to talk about how he and Turco made several bets about how the game would end up. After losing 2-1 in overtime, Turco paid up in several Canadian bills.

New York Rangers lose Ryan Callahan with fractured ankle
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL, Playoffs,
Everybody knows that Zdeno Chara has the hardest shot in the NHL, but nobody knows that more right now that Ryan Callahan of the New York Rangers. After blocking a Chara blast in Monday’s 5-3 comeback win against the Boston Bruins, Callahan left the game and it was later confirmed that he fractured his ankle on the play and is out indefinitely. Chances are Callahan won’t be back, regardless how long the Rangers playoff run extends.

Tampa Bay Lightning find ways to win in close games
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,
If the NHL playoffs began today, the Tampa Bay Lightning would enter as the fifth-seeded team in the east, taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins. Only two Eastern Conference playoff teams have scored more goals this season than the Lightning, but none have given up nearly as many as they have. In fact, with 216 goals for and 222 against, the Lightning are the only of the top eight teams in the east to give up more goals than they’ve scored.

Matt Cooke suspended 10 games plus playoffs
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL, Playoffs,
Matt Cooke is relentless. He seems to have a vampiric lust for brains and will stop at nothing to see them oozing out of his opponent’s ears after delivering a vicious head shot. His latest infraction came on Sunday when he laid out New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh with his elbow, effectively challenging NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell to either start a new chapter in punishment for the kind of hits nobody wants to see, or let history repeat itself by doling out a meaningless penalty.

Cam Ward keeping Carolina Hurricanes playoff hopes alive
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,
It appears as though Cam Ward needs to be flawless. In his last two games, he was exactly that for all but 12 seconds, and it cost his team two points as a result. Ward stopped all 40 shots in a win against Buffalo on Tuesday, but his Carolina Hurricanes fell 3-1 to the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. In that game, he stopped 16 of 19 shots, but was also utterly useless for a brief moment in the second period when he let in a pair of weak goals a dozen seconds apart.

Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby was named NHL First Star for the week ending March 13. It was the first honor the young netminder has received in his short NHL career, and he couldn’t have been more deserving. Called into action on short notice, Holtby put up a 4-0-0 record on the week with a 1.05 goals against average and .965 save percentage. He beat Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin and Anaheim’s Corey Perry, who were named second and third stars.

James Reimer’s Leafs making late postseason push
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Playoffs,
The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the best position they’ve seen in years, and they’re still not in a playoff spot. They currently hold the 10th-seed in the Eastern Conference and realistically, are only chasing the Sabres, Rangers and Hurricanes. Maybe it’s because the Leafs haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967, or maybe it’s because the team hasn’t even made the playoffs since before the lockout, but fans in Toronto have been going nuts (more than usual) after every win lately. After Monday night’s loss, the Leafs are six back of the eight spot.

Winning the Stanley Cup can make a lot of good things happen for you. Your name gets inscribed on the championship trophy, you get to take that NHL hardware home with you to show off to family and friends, and you even get to travel to the White House to shake hands with the President. On Friday, the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks made their honorary visit to Washington, D.C. to do just that.

Air Canada threatens to kill sponsorship with NHL
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Injuries, NHL, Rumors,
“Air Canada is a great brand, as is the National Hockey League, and if they decide that they need to do other things with their sponsorship dollars, that’s their prerogative.” That was NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s response to the threat from Air Canada to cancel their sponsorship deal with the NHL unless the latter implements harsher punishments for offenders who put others’ safety at risk with their style of play, such as with the hit issued by Zdeno Chara to Max Pacioretty in a game on Tuesday.
