Sidney Crosby had 2 assists en route to an easy 3-1 victory over the New York Rangers. Also contributing to the Pittsburgh Penguins victory was Marion Hossa who scored a goal, as well as Evgeni Malkov and Max Talbot, each scoring goals. Marc-Andre Fleury was top notch in the winning effort, saving 26 of 27 attempted shots.

“I can’t wait for about 10 days, to start this thing (the playoffs),” said Max Talbot. “It’s good that it’s all (division) games like this until the end of the season. Every little play can change the game and that’s playoff hockey, and that’s what we’re in right now.”

The New York Islanders shut down goalie Rick DiPietro for the season, and the results already show that he’ll be missed. Journeyman goalie Joey MacDonald made his first start of the year giving up 4 goals of 26 attempted shots. The goals for the Flyers were scored by Daniel Briere, Scott Hartnell, Braydon Coburn and Vaclav Prospal. On March 4th, New York Islanders fans held their heads up high, as their team had defeated the New York Rangers 4-3 via shootout. Tonight the Rangers evened things up by taking a 4-1 victory against the Islanders and goalie Wade Dubielewicz, who saved 24 of 27 attempted shots. Starting Isles goalie Rick DiPietro was available for action, but head coach Ted Nolan chose Dubielewicz because of his impressive play of late.

“He’s (Wade Dubielewicz) a hot hand,” Nolan said. “You can second-guess yourself, ifs, ands, buts and everything else. I mean, Dubielewicz has been playing well. Ricky’s had three or four days off. It’s kind of unfair to put him into a situation like this. Now, he’s got two practices, and he’ll run with it from here on in.”

On their first game back from the 2008 NHL trading deadline the Buffalo Sabres defeated the Nashville Predators 8-4. The big story in this game was Steve Bernier, the 22 year old forward the Sabs dealt away defenseman Brian Campbell for. In his first game with Buffalo, Bernier scored 2 goals with an assist. The team had 33 total shots on net.

“When your confidence is not where you want it to be and the first shot you make you score, it helps,” said Bernier, who spent three total seasons with the Sharks. “I’m glad everything went the way I wanted everything to go. … Yeah, it’s a good start, but nothing is done yet.”

New Sens Coach, Bryan Murray
Someone had to take the hit for the poor play of late from the Ottawa Senators. That someone would turn out to be head coach John Paddock.

On Wednesday Sens General Manager Bryan Murray fired Paddock, and gave the head coach job to himself. The season started out innocently enough for Paddock, Ottawa got off to a 15-2 start on the season. However with 4 wins and 8 losses this month, and 7 losses the previous month, GM Murray hit the panic button in an attempt to salvage the season for his Senators, a team still in first place.
