Georges LaraqueIs Georges Laraque being forced into some sort of unceremonious retirement? The Montreal Canadiens who are now Laraque’s former team, have come to a crossroads with the 33-year old enforcer and decided to effectively “buy him out,” by telling him that while they will continue to sign his paychecks, he won’t put on a Canadiens uniform ever again. He signed a three-year contract with Montreal, but has now been taken off the roster, just halfway into the deal.

Tyler BozakHave the Toronto Maple Leafs reached desperation? Since last summer, when Leafs GM Brian Burke merely mentioned the word “playoffs,” fans have taken his meaning completely out of context and are now reeling against the GM for his lies and lack of results; not to mention his team’s awful play this season. Phil Kessel, acquired from Boston for three draft picks (two firsts and a second), has struggled, and in a Burke-esque move, the Leafs have called up forward Tyler Bozak from the Toronto Marlies AHL team to center the first line.

Mike BrodeurStep aside Martin, there’s a new Brodeur in town. Distant relative Mike has made the NHL and is ready for action. Called up as an emergency replacement for injured teammate Pascal Leclaire, Brodeur has filled the backup role exceptionally, shutting out the Rangers on Jan. 14, then allowing just two goals to the Canadiens on Jan. 16. Brodeur’s only other NHL experience was his debut on Dec. 19 against the Minnesota Wild where he stopped 22 of 23 shots. He was credited with the “W” on all three occasions.

Nikolai KhabibulinThe New Year has not been good to the Edmonton Oilers. Winless in 2010, the last time the Oilers put two points on the board was Dec. 30, when they topped the Maple Leafs 3-1. The only other point they’ve added was a Jan. 5 overtime loss to Phoenix. Including those two games, the Oilers are 1-13-1 since Dec. 15; the worst mark in the National Hockey League, by far. Over that span, the Oilers have been outscored 59-30.

Curtis Joseph One of the greatest goalies has officially called it a career. 42-year old Curtis Shayne Joseph, better known as “CuJo” to fans, announced his retirement from the National Hockey League on Tuesday at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Joseph will be remembered most for the fact that he has the most wins among goalies who have never won a Stanley Cup, as well as the fact that he is tied with Gump Worsely for most losses in a career as well, but people won’t talk about that as much.

Sidney CrosbyWell there’s something you don’t see every day. In Saturday’s match between the Maple Leafs and the Penguins, Sergei Gonchar stunned the Blue and White faithful into complete and utter silence with a pair of second period goals. The first came after he rifled a shot that appeared to slam off the post and rebound out to the Leafs defenders, who pushed the puck up to Alexai Ponikarovsky, who, on a breakway, was taken down by none other than Gonchar, and was awarded a penalty shot. The play, however, went to review.

DescriptionLots of people have good luck charms. Some have socks, others coins; charms come in every shape and size. For the Philadelphia Flyers, their good luck charm comes from the voice of Kathryn Elizabeth Smith. Born in Greenville, Virginia on May 1, 1909, Smith was a Broadway performer and recording artist most affectionately remembered for her performance of “God Bless America,” which she first performed on Armistice Day in 1938. That performance would stay with her for the rest of her life.

Tim ThomasLet the media frenzy begin! The 2010 Winter Olympics inched closer this week with the announcements of Team Canada and Team USA’s hockey rosters. Canadian GM Steve Yzerman unveiled his team in a massive conference on Wednesday, while Brian Burke gave his USA selections following the Winter Classic in Boston. Perhaps the most prestigious event of the Games, the men’s hockey teams have been unveiled and fans and media alike are weighing in on the choices, debating whether or not the chosen players will be good enough to compete for gold in February.

Fenway ParkSo who’s watching Atlanta against Buffalo on Friday night? What was the National Hockey League thinking when they scheduled this game? The fact that the heavily-promoted Winter Classic between Philadelphia and Boston at Fenway Park takes place during the day not only completely overshadows the nightcap, but there is even going to be about three hours between the games. Just enough time to forget that Atlanta and Buffalo even exist once the new New Year’s tradition ends.

Lorne ChabotIn honor of Brodeur’s latest goaltending achievement; breaking Terry Sawchuk’s record of 103 shutouts, let’s take a look at one of the other most impressive shutouts in NHL history. The 1930s saw one of the longest playoff games ever played, and amazingly it was a 0-0 affair until the lone goal was scored. While neither of the goaltenders who played in that game are held to the same level of esteem as Brodeur and his shutouts, both will always be remembered for the heroic effort they put in for the benefit of their respective team. That, and the fact that combined they faced 207 shots while not wearing masks.
