Good luck to Jerramy Stevens
Oh no, the Seahawks woke up the sleeping dragon, conspiracy theorist, Joey Porter.  Porter has kept quite so far, but now it looks like he’s out for blood again - good luck to the Seattle offensive line trying to hold him back.  What led to trigger Porter’s anger now?  Seattle’s TE Jerramy Stevens made some comments he may end up regretting.

Stevens made some comments that will only pump Porter up.  Bad move Stevens.  Stevens doesn’t think Bettis will leave Detroit with the Vince Lombardi trophy and was quote saying:

“It’s a heartwarming story and all that, but it will be a sad day when he leaves without that trophy,”

Porter shot back by saying:

“has a lot of nerve” to say what he said about Bettis.

Regarding his thoughts of Stevens as a player:

“a first-round bust who barely made some plays this season.”

Stevens shouldn’t have made a “guarantee” like that, he’s not Mark Messier.  Now we feel bad for RB Shaun Alexander and FB Mack Strong who is going to have to pick up Porter on blitzes.  We wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander suffers another concussion.

McNabb pleading to Terrell Owens
When Terrell Owens mentioned the Eagles would be better off with Brett Favre as the quarterback instead of McNabb, McNabb took the high road and didn’t respond back with an insult.  As time has progressed, and with all signs pointing to T.O. leaving the Eagles, it looks like now the gloves are off.

McNabb thought Owens’ previous comments could be categorized as “black-on-black crime”.  McNabb was quoted saying:

“It was like, it’s unreal,” McNabb said. “That’s like me going out and saying, ‘Hey, if we had Steve Largent. If we had Joe Jurevicius. It was definitely a slap in the face to me. It was a slap in the face because, as deep as people want to go into it, it was black-on-black crime.”

“It’s different to say, ‘If we had Michael Vick or Daunte Culpepper or Steve McNair or Byron Leftwich,” McNabb said of four black starting quarterbacks. “But to go straight to Brett Favre, that kind of just slapped me in the face like, ‘Wow ...”’

I am not going to sit here and bash McNabb’s comments, because I feel he is a good guy, and his remarks were said in frustration, but his points can surely be debated.  First off, comparing Terrell Owens to Joe Jurevicius is not the same as comparing McNabb to Favre.  Sorry Donovan, Jurevicius is just plain not better than Owens, even though in T.O’s mind Favre might be better than McNabb.  The QB statement made by T.O. is debatable, while the WR comparison by McNabb is not.  Feel free to insert your own ‘McNabb throws to Jurevicius, TOUCHDOWN’ joke here.  Secondly, if T.O. said he would rather have had either Vick, Culpepper, McNair, Leftwich instead of you, that wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever,  because those players aren’t better than you Donovan, so relax.

Bottom line, I know Donovan that you’re just sick of all the criticism you’ve had to endure this past season, and I feel for you.  T.O. was wrong for throwing you under the bus like that, but he won’t be around next year to pick on you.  Hope that your Eagles play the Broncos in the Super Bowl and hit him when it hurts the most.

Mad Catz Oakland Raiders XBOX controller
I was at Best Buy earlier today, and ran across a cool product that I wanted to share.  Apparently, Mad Catz has licensing rights for not only NFL teams, but also for MLB, NBA, Batman Begins, and Fantastic Four.  Best Buy had the PS2 controllers for $24.99 and the XBOX controllers from $29.99.  For you sports fans out there who happen to like video games,  this would be very tempting to buy.

Terrell Owens touchdown celebrationThe outspoken, controversial-yet-talented Terrell Owens met with Bronco’s coach Mike Shanahan last week.  Denver is looking to improve their passing game which was ranked 18th in the league to go with an already strong running game.  Denver’s current starting WR’s are 36 year old Rod Smith and inconsistent Ashley Lelie.  If Owens were to work out well in Denver, jerseys will fly off the shelves, QB Jake Plummer might elevate his game to a Pro Bowl level, and the wins would keep on coming.  The only negative I foresee would be the lack of touchdown dances, since Owens would have to conform to team rules and perform the “Mile High salute”.

Detroit Lions logoForget all the talk about Super Bowl XL being in Detroit, let’s talk about the hometown team - the Detroit Lions.  I know you Detroit fans hate Matt Millen with a passion, so I hope to give you some optimism for next year.  Firstly, there has been a coaching change, even though some fans may say ex-coach Steve Mariucci wasn’t really the problem.  The new head coach coming in is a relative unknown. He is Rod Marinelli, a former Tampa Bay defensive line coach.  Lions also recently hired Donnie Henderson as their defensive coordinator, formerly of the New York Jets.  They also have their eye on Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator.  There has to be some excitement over the coordinator moves at the very least.  Well, those moves will only be as good as how the players perform on the field, and with that being said, they’ll most likely acquire a good player from the draft at the #9 position.  According to NFL Draft Countdown, they have Lions choosing a USC product and you can’t go wrong with those guys. Winston Justice, who played right tackle for the Trojans is one of them.  If not, USC RB Lendale White should still be on the board as well, if the Lions decide the injury prone Kevin Jones is not the answer.

Houston Texans logoGary Kubiak is going to have his hands full in the AFC South with Indianapolis, Jacksonville, and Tennessee in the same division.  Last season the Texans went 0-6 versus division opponents.  Kubiak has made a name for himself as a Denver Broncos backup quarterback and has been the offensive coordinator since 1994.

This move may lead to a round of musical chairs, as New York Jets offensive coordinator has been eyeing the now vacant Denver coordinator role.  The Jets who are now on the search for both offensive and defensive coordinators, have listed Chris Palmer (Houston Texans), Mike Shephard (New Orleans Saints) or Steve Fairchild (St. Louis Rams) as potential candidates.

The Steelers are not going to be playing in Heinz field, therefore coach Bill Cowher considers playing in the Super Bowl a road game.  In the tradition of wearing new pairs of black sneakers for the Playoffs, shaving heads, not shaving facial hair or not changing underwear during a win streak, all things considered it looks like the Steelers are a lock to beat the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL.

Which brings up a question: Why are the Steelers considered the home team anyway?  The game will be held in Detroit, an NFC team stadium.  I know each year they alternate which conference winner is considered the home team, but it makes no sense to me.  Now that Pittsburgh is the home team, Seattle will make the call for heads or tails, this way Jerome Bettis won’t have to go through the blatant referee foul up like the last time he made a call in Detroit on Thanksgiving a couple years back.

Jim Haslett on the sidelinesHaslett is going back to his roots from his days as a linebacker coach for the Raiders and defensive coordinator for the Steelers from ‘97-‘99.  Haslett will be working under rookie coach Scott Linehan, who made a name for himself as the Minnesota Viking offensive coordinator and last season with the Miami Dolphins.  At least now the Rams have a decent in-house candidate if the season were to go bad for the Rams.  Makes you wonder if this will put extra pressure on Linehan knowing that their is a viable candidate right under him in the organization, or perhaps they can put their strategic minds together and make for a successful tandem.

Vanderjagt kicking on the David Letterman showMike Vanderjagt, a free agent this off-season is perhaps trying to get back into good graces with the two time MVP QB.  Vanderjagt was quoted comparing Peyton Manning to be the Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods of football.  Vanderjagt probably took some flak from teammates and Colts management by showing up on the David Letterman show last week, kicking field goals in the New York streets.

Peter King Monday Morning QB logo
Peter King, usually an entertaining read on SI.COM, really irked me when I read his Monday Morning QB article.  One particular section of his weekly article that consistently annoys me is his random thoughts section called ‘Ten Things I Think I Think.’  He just rambles on about various football topics and he doesn’t actually gives ten random thoughts - he gives about sixty.  He numbers them one through ten, but then he makes footnotes lettered A-Z, until he runs out topics that are on his mind.

This is the comment that really grinds my gears:

“11. New York Giants (11-6). Just a hunch, but I bet the Giants would take Ben Roethlisberger, Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding instead of Eli Manning right now.”

Ok, sure the Giants would have used the #4 pick on Roethlisberger if they didn’t trade up to take Manning, but the jury is still out on who is going to be the better QB by the time their careers are over.  Manning also has a much higher ceiling than Big Ben does.  Who is to say that the Giants would have used the future draft picks on Nate Kaeding, and Shawne Merriman, maybe they would be off the board by the time it was the Giants turn to pick?  Who is to say that the three of them would succeed in New York, when not a lot of players have the mental toughness to do so?  Maybe Big Ben would have turned into Ryan Leaf he had been drafted by New York, we’ll never know.  There is no need to criticize or second guess this move, especially with Giants fans happy to know they will be a contender with their franchise QB for years to come.
