Mark Cuban strikes again in comeback victory Just like Phil Jackson, Sam Mitchell is complaining about the Mavericks’ home-court advantage.  This time it’s over the publc-address. announcer, “Humble” Billy Hayes.  Arena music or requests for noise from the PA man are supposed to stop when the visiting team has the ball, but the Raptors contend that Hayes repeatedly implored the crowd to chant when Toronto had advanced past half court and was getting into its offensive sets.  Wait - if this is true, what about all the chants of DE-FENSE! DE-FENSE! going on in all the arenas?  Sounds like more sour grapes after losing a game, get over it visiting teams, that is what being at home is supposed to be like, a nuisance for the opposing teams.

Van Gundy gives the best actor award to Reggie EvansWhile playing the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets center Yao Ming picked up two offensive foul charging calls while being defended by Reggie Evans.  Jeff Van Gundy sees Evans’ defense more as flopping rather than Yao dipping the shoulder into Evans.  Jeff Van Gundy is about to give Evans the Oscar award for best acting, here is what he said:

“I am so sick of watching that guy flop I can’t stand it. It is an absolute disgrace what he does,” Van Gundy said. “Those two fouls he supposedly drew on Yao [Ming] the other night were a joke—jumping into the front row. The NBA’s got to do something about it.” -  Houston Chronicle

Reggie Evans you have just been served by a short Jewish coach who is most known for humping Alonzo Mourning’s leg.

The New York Knicks are terrible The only good thing that comes from the New York Knicks playing so bad this season is that the corporate big-wigs are giving up their seats every so often, so I was able to check out the Knicks Friday night loss in heart-breaking fashion to the Chicago Bulls in the front row.  The celebrities this time in MSG were Adam Sandler, Ja Rule, and Kevin Bacon - all sitting next to each other.

Watching from the front row, I was directly behind Brandon Tierney of 1050 ESPN radio and had a few observations.  The speed of the game is amazingly fast, it is played at a much faster pace than it looks on television, and even from other seating sections.  If a guard blows by his man, the big guys helping out to block the shot have to react instantaneously, otherwise it’s going to be a lay-up for the opposing team.

Well, up close in personal, you can see that none of the Knicks players play with passion or any intensity except for Channing Frye.  Francis and Marbury are trying some of the time, but both are either being moody, arguing with referees and not getting back on defense and are just plain not inspiring teammates.  Curry and Crawford look horrible, aside from the occasional Sportcenter highlight type moves, otherwise they are both very overrated - their stats do not reflect their actual impact on the game.  Marbury also does not get any of the questionable calls going his way from the referees, especially with him going to the basket.

For more sorrows and commentary, here is another suffering New York Knicks fan.  For this will surely be the very last time mentioning the pitiful Knicks for the rest of this season, I promise you that.

Tim Thomas may be headed to PhoenixLife just isn’t fair sometimes.  Why should a player like Tim Thomas, who refused to play all year for the Chicago Bulls, gets to keep his entire ‘05-‘06 salary which is 13.9 million dollars, clear waivers then gets to sign with the Phoenix Suns for even more money?  Not only does he get to play for a good team, but he is getting paid extra for it.  Tim Thomas better at least bring some more funny sound bites like the “fugazy” comment to the table.  Every team Thomas has played for has been left with a sour taste in their mouth - all the way back to his college days in Villanova, where Wildcat fans were disappointed to see him leave after just one year of college ball.

James Gandolfini at the New Jersey Nets game
Alright Knick fans, it is time to start worrying about losing the Hollywood/celebrity fan base to the New Jersey Nets.  The other famous face that is a frequently appearing at the Continental Airlines Arena is famous rapper Jay-Z.  Jay-Z is from Brooklyn, NY and is minority owner of the New Jersey Nets, who is perhaps looking into moving the team to Brooklyn. Gandolfini is a New Jersey native and sure has pride of his home state, and is rooting his team on.  Here is Gandolfini spotted at yesterday’s game versus the Indiana Pacers.

Ha Seung-JinYou’re telling me this isn’t some sort of gang symbol?  Please, I wasn’t born yesterday, keep your eyes out for this guy.

Telfair will serve a two game suspension for violating the leagues firearms policy.  The league prohibits players from carrying a firearm while traveling on team or league business.  (I can’t believe there has to be a rule like this by the way, it’s called common sense.) Telfair admitted to mistakenly taking his girlfriends bag which had a loaded gun inside last week in Boston.  Unfortunately the team was not headed to Philadelphia, this way Telfair could have claimed he brought the gun in exchange for 76er’s tickets.

With Portland trading Ruben Patterson, Telfair and Zach Randolph are the last of the “Jail Blazers” - but management seems to ready to build the team around these guys.  The next Portland player I predict to be the next cool thug is back-up center Ha Seung-Jin.  Too bad they couldn’t swing a deal for Darko Milicic, because Rasheed Wallace has been quoted saying: “I’m telling you, Darko is a Serbian gangster.”  Straight up, fool.

Telfair, who is Stephon Marbury’s cousin, has some other bone-headed relatives;  Hassan Gonsalves and Tasheem Ward were involved in the Isiah Thomas sexual harassment scandal, where Gonslaves and Ward were hired and later had to be fired by MSG even though they were “completely unqualified”.

Philadelphia fans on 610 WIP are intelligent and passionateHoly cow, I spent my entire day in the Pennsylvania area today, and was able to catch 610 AM WIP Sports Talk radio for the majority of the day.  I am impressed how for the most part Philadelphia fans are not fair-weather fans, and are “four for four” fans - meaning they are die-hard fans of Eagles, 76ers, Flyers, and Phillies.  The topic of the day was the blown out of proportion comments of 76ers/Flyers owner Ed Snider.  Snider’s comments were something to the affect of: “Hey maybe I should move the team to a city that would support the team”.  This comment was obviously made in the heat of the moment, even though it was a mistake to threaten the loyal Philadelphia fans.

The hot buttons were the criticism of 76ers President/GM Billy King and his trade moves, especially obtaining Chris Webber late last season.  The fans have been frustrated with the team being stuck in mediocrity since the trip to the NBA Finals when Larry Brown was there coach.  76er fans should be grateful they don’t have the Knicks management running their team to the ground.  Snider was interviewed in the mid-afternoon to defend his comments made the night before, and was trying to quell the fans anger.  The bottom line is that, all but a handful of teams are under the salary cap, and the current system in which the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement is operating on, it is very difficult to make the necessary changes to make your team from pretender to contender.  To all you sports fanatics out there, if your team is struggle, please keep voicing your concerns and disappointment, but remember it is harder than you think to change your team’s fortunes around.

Get these babies while their hot, Pennys back in townAfter hearing all the rumors, the deal came to fruition.  The Orlando Magic trades away unhappy guard Steve Francis to the New York Knicks for a familiar face in Penny Hardaway and Trevor Ariza.  Hardaway, who had a bright start to his career in the mid 90’s playing for the Orlando Magic, will return back to the land of the Magic Kingdom.  Magic fans can dust their old Penny Hardaway jerseys off the shelves.  The Knicks front office will most likely continue to keep on the phones and try to find a suitor for Jamal Crawford and/or Quentin Richardson.  I would not imagine even the most optimistic of Knick fans would see this trade as a move that can turn the teams fortune around, but at least it will be an interesting soap opera, watching how Marbury, Francis, and Jalen Rose share the ball.  By not trading away Channing Frye, most of Isiah Thomas’ critics will have to put their sharp tongues on hold for the time being.  At least this trade keeps the sexual harassment accusations out of the headlines for Thomas.

Jay Mohr is taking his Bob Sugar agent character from Jerry Maguire way too seriously.  There is no need to bash the All-Star festivities, and especially the Slam Dunk contest.  The Slam Dunk contest used to stink, but ever since Vince Carter joined the fun, it’s been a good event.  I think the low point for the slam dunk contest was Brent Barry winning the event on the foul line dunk, seeing as how that was done twice already.  Remember last year when Chris Anderson made the slam dunk contest look bad?  Where is Chris Anderson now?  He got suspended two years for drug abuse even though he was just a first time offender.  Conspiracy theorists must unite and memo to all participants of All-Star Weekend, David Stern doesn’t mess around.  David Stern wants the white fans to come back. As far as entertainment, we viewers get opera singer Andrea Bocelli performing - say goodbye to the rap stars.  C’mon Jay, I’m just messing with you, I loved you in Mafia - but seriously lay off the NBA or else David Stern is going make you pay somewhere, somehow.

Lebron James giving the DDP signSome suggest calling this style of play the North Carolina two-guard disease.  It only applied to Michael Jordan and Vince Carter, and it is not as common as Marbury-itis, but at least these guys had some valid excuses.  Jordan took some major punishment going to the rack earlier in his career, especially from the Pistons.  Those guys purposely funneled him into the hole just to foul the guy.  Jordan eventually developed an awesome fade-away shot and the rest is history.  Carter had some nagging injuries that made him leery to go to the basket, and admitted he wasn’t playing 100% for the Toronto Raptors.  Now he is rejuvenated in New Jersey back to making fantastic dunks and all kinds of circus shots.

This leads me to this question.  What happened to Lebron James?  Sure he has great stats and the Cavs are doing ok, but wow, he sure is jacking up a lot of outside shots and now isn’t really the passing threat he used to be.  James has only been in the league for 2+ seasons, don’t tell me he is already losing some steam in taking it to the hole. I’m sure James is going to turn out just fine.  Oh Lebron, by the way, what was up with your Diamond Dallas Page hand signal you were giving out at the all-star game about?
