Both Alfonso Soriano of the Chicago Cubs and Vladimir Guerrero of the Los Angeles Angels were left bruised and in pain during their respective games on Monday. Guerrero had the less severe of the two injuries, as he suffered a bruised right wrist after getting hit by a pitch delivered by the Boston Red Sox’s Josh Beckett. Vlad left the game after getting medical attention from Angels’ team trainer.

Dropping Dimes: Do Not Draft Amare Stoudemire!
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Editorial, Fantasy, Injuries, NBA,
Okay, some of you are probably still infatuated with what Stoudemire did during the 2004-2005 season and it’s nothing to sneeze at - 26.0 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 1.0 spg, 1.6 bpg, 55.9 FG%, and a big man that can actually shoot free throws, my word, at a 73.3% clip! And on top of all those very good numbers, Stoudemire was center eligible! That in itself elevates his value a great deal! But, did you read the subject line? I’m sure you did. What does it say? That’s right… despite all that good stuff during the aforementioned season, do not draft Amare Stoudemire.

Bartolo Colon Probably Done For The Season
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB, News,
Los Angeles Angels SP Bartolo Colon, last season’s A.L. Cy Young winner, has a rotator cuff problem that will need to be fixed, either by aggressive rehabilitation or the dreaded “S” word - surgery. In either case, the 33-year-old Colon will need to do something and it’s probably going to have to be next season considering his recent injury history. Colon was on the D.L. for two months earlier in the season from April 19 - June 17 with inflammation in his throwing shoulder and just recently went back on it with tendinitis in his triceps. In only 10 starts, Colon is 1-5 with a 5.11 ERA.
Javy Lopez Traded From Baltimore To Boston
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Injuries, MLB, News, Trades,
Welcome to Beantown, Mr. Lopez, your services will come in quite handy. Since C Jason Varitek went down to injury a couple of days, which required arthroscopic surgery for the Red Sox’ captain, the Red Sox needed to make a move to try to replace Varitek. Let’s be honest, Doug Mirabelli wasn’t going to cut it, especially considering all the moves rival, the New York Yankees did before and on the trading deadline - acquiring OF Bobby Abreu and SP Cory Lidle from the Philadelphia Phillies and C/1B/OF Craig Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Javy Lopez, a former All-Star and hitter of 43 dingers while with the Atlanta Braves should improve the offense - definitely from Mirabelli, and possibly compared to Varitek who was having an off year. With the emergence of free-agent acquisition, Ramon Hernandez, the Baltimore Orioles had no problem trading Lopez. The Orioles will receive the proverbial “player to be named later.”
Two Key Players To Pennant Contenders Lost
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Editorial, Injuries, MLB, News,
The N.L. East leading New York Mets and the A.L. East leading Boston Red Sox both lost major keys to their success, whether it be from hard statistics or intangibles that brought the team together, they are both worse off than they were a couple of days ago.
The New York Mets lost middle reliever extraordinaire, Duaner Sanchez, for the season after a taxicab accident near the team’s hotel in Florida on Sunday night. This is actually the second year in a row that a New York Mets pitcher was involved in a taxicab accident with Tom Glavine getting in one last season. In any case, because of the accident, the Mets were forced to trade starting RF Xavier Nady to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 41 year old, Roberto Hernandez, and the once dominating, but now a mysterious failure, Oliver Perez.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith did not practice today, a day after straining his left hamstring running a route during training camp. This is not good news for the Panthers and their offense as Smith was a huge part of it in 2005 when he had 103 receptions for 1,563 receiving yards, and 12 TDs. After not having much of a supporting cast in the WR corp - Ricky Proehl and Kerry Colbert tied for second on the team in receptions with a very low 25 catches each - the Panthers signed Keyshawn Johnson during the offseason. Hamstring injuries are tricky as they can feel fine in a day or hamper you for the next few months. It remains to be seen how affected Smith’s left hammy is, but if Smith has to sit out camp, the team could have a serious problem on the offensive side. You can’t replace a Steve Smith.
Derrek Lee Goes On The Disabled List
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB, News,
The Chicago Cubs placed 1B Derrek Lee on the 15-day disabled list in order for last season’s Triple Crown threat to get some rest for his sore right wrist. Since coming back from his first stint on the disabled list, Lee was batting a poor .227 with only one home run and four RBI in 20 games. Compared to last season when Lee hit .335 with 46 home runs, it is a striking difference and perhaps Lee came back too soon from his April 19th injury when the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Rafael Furcal collided with Lee, breaking two bones in Lee’s right wrist. However, it isn’t any news that the Cubs would treat injuries ineffectively as both Mark Prior and Kerry Woods suffered injury, came back, and in a bit of time only, went right back on the shelf. The Cubs have no plans to put Lee on the DL for the whole season, despite not really having anything to play for, postseason-wise.
Dealing To The Dish: National League 6.28.06
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Editorial, Injuries, MLB,
Interleague games being played in National League ballparks:
Chicago White Sox @ Pittsburgh Pirates
F. García (9-4, 4.66) vs. P. Maholm (2-6, 4.90)
Freddy Garcia looks to stay perfect against the N.L. this season, having already won three games, giving up four runs in 24.0 innings of work. In his last outing, he won a pitching duel with young pitching prospect, St. Louis Cardinals Anthony Reyes. Garcia gets to match up against another prospect in Paul Maholm. Thanks to a robust White Sox offense, Garcia should win this matchup as well.
Tampa Bay Devil Rays @ Florida Marlins
C. Fossum (2-3, 5.25) vs. S. Olsen (6-3, 4.60)
The Battle for Florida state continues as the D-Rays, representing the geriatric part of the state, face the Marlins, representing the beautiful people part of the F-L-A. Both teams are basically out of the race for their respective divisions, but both are so loaded with young talent, if management plays it right, that could all change in the coming seasons. In the meantime, enjoy the killer Casey Fossum/Scott Olsen pitching contest.
Kansas City Royals @ Cincinnati Reds
S. Elarton (3-8, 4.87) vs. A. Harang (8-5, 3.59)
The Reds are hanging with the N.L. Central leading St. Louis Cardinals, only 1.5 games back. Unfortuantely, it hasn’t been because the Reds have played particularly well, as they’re 4-6 in their last 10 games; it’s because the Cardinals have tanked in their last ten, going 2-8. With an injury to Mark Mulder, the Reds can make a move. In the forefront of that moment should be Aaron Harang who continues to build on last season’s breakout performance. In essence, the Royals are just plain bad. However, in Great American Ballpark, the offense can really boost up their offensive production. Then again, so can the Reds.
