George Mason Patriots stuns the UConn HuskiesThe star-studded UConn team who escaped in the Sweet 16 match-up with Washington still had luck and skill on their side again to force over time against the upstart George Mason Patriots of the Colonial Athletic Association.  UConn provided two great games in a row for NCAA fans in the role of Goliath, but George Mason was able to knock out the #1 seed.  This game will go down as one of the best ever and on caliber with the classic Duke/ Kentucky Christian Laettner buzzer beater game.  George Mason has successfully busted every single bracket across the country with a dramatic win over the UConn Huskies.  Guard Denham Brown barely missed a three point shot at the buzzer with a chance to win the game.  An absolutely outstanding game that will provide as inspiration for all underdog athletes for many years to come.

Hasim Rahman defeats James ToneyThis must be the biggest fight in the ho-hum heavyweight division since Lennox Lewis retired in 2004.  The fight was a snooze-fest resulting in Hasim Rahman defeating James Toney and hanged onto the Heavyweight Championship.  During the fight last night in Atlantic City, N.J., there were no knock-downs and it did not appear either fighter was in jeopardy at any point in the fight.  Toney was predicted by most boxing experts to come out victorious despite the fact he came into the fight at a heavy 237 pounds.  The other heavyweight contenders are Chris Byrd, Nicolay Valuev and Lamon Brewster, all whom do not have the box office appeal as the boxers in other weight classes.  The only bright side of the fight was that it was televised on HBO and not on PPV.

Japan Vs Cuba in World Baseball Classic finals Cuba defeated the Major League star-studded lineup Dominican Republic team, and Japan finally defeated Korea after losing in their first two attempts.  Team Korea had a familiar goat in Byung-Hyun Kim, who gave up a home run in a scoreless tie.  Kim is best known for blowing saves in the 2001 World Series for the Arizona Diamondbacks versus the New York Yankees.  With Cuba defeating the strong Dominican team, the MLB must be drooling for more Cuban defectors such as Livan and Orlando Hernandez.  The finals will be played on Monday 9 P.M. in San Diego’s Petco Park.

NCAA tournament doing well in ratingsAlright, so it’s not just me imagining things about this year being a little bit more exciting than previous years.  The first two days of the NCAA tournament on CBS have generated it’s best ratings since 1997.  Thursday and Friday generated a 5.0 rating with a 12 share, compared to a 4.8 and 11 share last year.  Each overnight rating point represents about 735,000 TV homes, that translates to 3,675,000 TV’s.  This is not even including the multiple people at bars, people watching on the same television.

Team USA loses to Mexico It’s back to Spring Training for the American players.  Team USA was unable to defeat Mexico last night, and therefore, was eliminated in round two of the World Baseball Classic.  In perhaps Roger Clemens’ last game, the Rocket pitched well, despite taking the 2-1 loss.  The major Achilles was that the Team USA bats were nowhere to be found.  Team USA have only a tainted win over Japan to show for their round 2 performance, and certainly did not deserve to advance.  There are four teams left standing in the WBC whom will face each other in single elimination games on Saturday and the championship game will follow on Monday March 20th.  The semi-final games are the Dominican Republic versus Cuba and Korea facing off against Japan once again, a team they have defeated twice already.

Duke might get ousted earlier again this yearOut of seven “experts” choosing their picks for the National Champions, and the only two teams that were picked were Duke and Connecticut.  Five predicted that Connecticut would be the champion, and the other two votes went to Duke.  Are these guys forgetting that freshman point guards generally have a tough time in the tournament, particularly versus opponents that put on a full court press?  I wouldn’t be surprised to see freshman PG Greg Paulus struggle in the tournament.  If J.J. Redick helps bring the ball up the court, it will take Duke out of their offense.  UConn is in the weak D.C. bracket, where the only team I see that might give UConn a scare is North Carolina, despite the fact that UConn at times plays down to their competition.

Albany wins the America East Conference TitleMy alma mater, the University at Albany finally has something to be proud of sports-wise.  They will be going to the big dance, the NCAA tournament, as a result of their winning the America East Conference championship.  The Great Danes got the victory on their home court, defeating last year’s champ Vermont.  The final score was 80-67, with Jamar Wilson leading the way with 29 points.  The Albany Danes made the jump to Division I in 1999, but this was the first year they’ve had any type of success in the America East conference. Congratulations to the Great Danes, today I am one of many proud alumnus of the University at Albany.

Syracuse versus Pittsburgh for the Big East title Both teams played yesterday and advance to the title game tonight at 8 p.m.  Last year Syracuse won the Big East Championship, but fizzled out in the NCAA.  The Most Outstanding Player of the tournament last year went to Hakim Warrick, all eyes will be on Sr. Guard Gerry McNamara.  This current run will in all likelihood get Syracuse in this year’s big dance.  Syracuse knocked off Georgetown last night and Pittsburgh advanced by defeated a highly-ranked Villanova team.  Most fans expected to see a Connecticut/Villnaova matchup, but most fans haven’t been disappointed by the level of play in this tournament.

Big East basketball tournament is underwayThree games were played yesterday, and the losers for the most part had their hopes for a NCAA tournament bid dashed away.  Syracuse beat Cincinnati by 1 point on Gerry McNamarra’s three-pointer with less than a second to play.  What is their reward?  Playing #1 seed Connecticut today at noon.  This is such a brutal tournament with tough opponents, and it has the strength of a third round in the NCAA tournament.  Rutgers beat Seton Hall last night and will face off against #2 Villanova later today.  Other marquee match-ups today are #16 Pittsburgh versus #21 West Virginia, #23 Georgetown versus Marquette.  For Big East College Basketball fans it doesn’t get any better than this.  Hopefully the winner of this tournament won’t be too exhausted by the time the NCAA tournament comes.

Hannah Teter, Gretchen Bleiler
Hannah Teter took home the gold and Gretchen Bleiler won the silver medal in the half pipe competition.  Bleiler is well known for her modeling in FHM magazine. Teter and Bleiler were interviewed this morning on Cold Pizza, to the dismay of Jay Crawford.  The two girls seemed to be “high” on life, among other things, in the video conference interview.  More subtle evidence showed up when Jay Crawford asked them where would their next destination would be.  The girls mentioned Hawaii, where “Puff the Dragon” came from.  At the end of the segment Jay Crawford mentioned the bar has now been officially raised for guest interviews.
