I couldn’t believe why Bob Klapisch, writer of the Record (N.J.) newspaper, would write about Giambi’s comeback last year without bashing his actions from the past. Giambi has been given a pass by Major League Baseball and the rest the media, who only were down on Giambi during the 2004 season when he was not performing up to his high salary standards. Yet it is a double standard when he makes a comeback in 2005 and performs well, suddenly people turn a blind eye that he was a steroid abuser, and did not have to pay the price of a suspension for his actions.
In the beginning of last season, we as fans kept hearing that the steroid policy is working and that MLB were suspended all these minor league players and fringe bench players that most fans weren’t aware of. The only two players that was of any name status were Minnesota Twins relief pitcher, Juan Rincon, and OF Matt Lawton. The hammer hasn’t gone down on the all-star type players, with the exception of Rafael Palmiero, which I feel is a travesty. Major League Baseball is obviously still protecting their own, and doing a half-hearted attempt to make things right regarding steroids.
To say that attention was deflected away from Giambi because of the Palmiero/ McGwire hearings are preposterous, because if Giambi were at the hearings, he would have denied the accusations himself also. Then he would have been vilified as Palmiero is. I normally wouldn’t touch upon this subject, but it makes me angry, that Giambi would be praised for bouncing back from a terrible ‘04 season, basically because his body adjusted to not having steroids in his system and found a happy medium of non-detectable substances in ‘05.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer is trying to teach the Lakers big men a few things about basketball. The pupils that he is taking under his wings are Andrew Bynum, Chris Mihm and my favorite punching bag Kwame Brown. Kareem has high hopes for Kwame Brown especially, thinking he can be a perennial all-star if he gets his act together.
Kareem was optimistic and shared his thoughts on Kwame Brown:
Kwame has so much talent. That’s a guy who suffered from not going to college. He’s a physical specimen and a hardworking guy who’s making progress. He’s getting a lot of offensive rebounds, keeping the other big guys off the boards, doing the little things.
“When I saw him, I thought, Karl Malone II. He hasn’t gotten there. I hope he does.”
Wow Kareem - as good as the Mailman Karl Malone? We’re going to hold you to that. I’m going to stick to my gut in that Kwame Brown’s career will be closer to other #1 draft pick bust Pervis Ellison rather than Karl Malone.

Joey Porter Angry with Seattle Seahawks
Posted by Jeff Chan Categories: Athletes, Championship, Super Bowl, NFL,
Oh no, the Seahawks woke up the sleeping dragon, conspiracy theorist, Joey Porter. Porter has kept quite so far, but now it looks like he’s out for blood again - good luck to the Seattle offensive line trying to hold him back. What led to trigger Porter’s anger now? Seattle’s TE Jerramy Stevens made some comments he may end up regretting.
Stevens made some comments that will only pump Porter up. Bad move Stevens. Stevens doesn’t think Bettis will leave Detroit with the Vince Lombardi trophy and was quote saying:
“It’s a heartwarming story and all that, but it will be a sad day when he leaves without that trophy,”
Porter shot back by saying:
“has a lot of nerve” to say what he said about Bettis.
Regarding his thoughts of Stevens as a player:
“a first-round bust who barely made some plays this season.”
Stevens shouldn’t have made a “guarantee” like that, he’s not Mark Messier. Now we feel bad for RB Shaun Alexander and FB Mack Strong who is going to have to pick up Porter on blitzes. We wouldn’t be surprised if Alexander suffers another concussion.

Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens Feuding Again
Posted by Jeff Chan Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NFL, Trades,
When Terrell Owens mentioned the Eagles would be better off with Brett Favre as the quarterback instead of McNabb, McNabb took the high road and didn’t respond back with an insult. As time has progressed, and with all signs pointing to T.O. leaving the Eagles, it looks like now the gloves are off.
McNabb thought Owens’ previous comments could be categorized as “black-on-black crime”. McNabb was quoted saying:
“It was like, it’s unreal,” McNabb said. “That’s like me going out and saying, ‘Hey, if we had Steve Largent. If we had Joe Jurevicius. It was definitely a slap in the face to me. It was a slap in the face because, as deep as people want to go into it, it was black-on-black crime.”
“It’s different to say, ‘If we had Michael Vick or Daunte Culpepper or Steve McNair or Byron Leftwich,” McNabb said of four black starting quarterbacks. “But to go straight to Brett Favre, that kind of just slapped me in the face like, ‘Wow ...”’
I am not going to sit here and bash McNabb’s comments, because I feel he is a good guy, and his remarks were said in frustration, but his points can surely be debated. First off, comparing Terrell Owens to Joe Jurevicius is not the same as comparing McNabb to Favre. Sorry Donovan, Jurevicius is just plain not better than Owens, even though in T.O’s mind Favre might be better than McNabb. The QB statement made by T.O. is debatable, while the WR comparison by McNabb is not. Feel free to insert your own ‘McNabb throws to Jurevicius, TOUCHDOWN’ joke here. Secondly, if T.O. said he would rather have had either Vick, Culpepper, McNair, Leftwich instead of you, that wouldn’t make any sense whatsoever, because those players aren’t better than you Donovan, so relax.
Bottom line, I know Donovan that you’re just sick of all the criticism you’ve had to endure this past season, and I feel for you. T.O. was wrong for throwing you under the bus like that, but he won’t be around next year to pick on you. Hope that your Eagles play the Broncos in the Super Bowl and hit him when it hurts the most.

ESPN Working On A Barry Bonds Reality Show
Posted by Jeff Chan Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB, Rumors,
The proposed Barry Bonds reality show would run throughout the upcoming 2006 MLB season, and would be a documentary of sorts while Bonds attempts to break Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record. Ugh, this would be a terrible idea, but then again the American viewer loves to watch people they hate, just look at Simon Cowell of American Idol, or Howard Stern. Cameras for the proposed Barry Bonds show would be on and off the field. Oh great - that is what Major League Baseball broadcasts needs, more idiotic cameras like the Fox catcher camera, audio mics on the bases, whoosh sounds in between replays, and in-game interviews with Bonds after at-bats where he is intentionally walked with a runner already on first. We don’t need “Real World” style confessions where Bond’s family members discuss their frustration with pitchers walking Bonds, Bonds complaining about the batting order and the clean-up hitter leaving him stranded on base. Hey Bonds, the last time you had a good batter behind you in the lineup for protection, you drove Jeff Kent out of town.
Wow, this was a surprising development to say the least. According to retail sales as late of November 2005, T-Mac is the number one NBA jersey sold in China, followed by Reebok spokesmen Allen Iverson and Yao Ming. Perhaps fans in China already own a few of Yao jerseys from his Shanghai Shark days, but one thing is we know for sure is Yao Ming is bringing NBA basketball to new heights in China. Even when Houston Rocket games are not on, fans in China are still logging on the NBA Chinese official website and requesting to see other games like the Cleveland Cavaliers to see Lebron James. To read about Yao’s economic impact around the globe, here is an interesting article.

The outspoken, controversial-yet-talented Terrell Owens met with Bronco’s coach Mike Shanahan last week. Denver is looking to improve their passing game which was ranked 18th in the league to go with an already strong running game. Denver’s current starting WR’s are 36 year old Rod Smith and inconsistent Ashley Lelie. If Owens were to work out well in Denver, jerseys will fly off the shelves, QB Jake Plummer might elevate his game to a Pro Bowl level, and the wins would keep on coming. The only negative I foresee would be the lack of touchdown dances, since Owens would have to conform to team rules and perform the “Mile High salute”.

Ian Thorpe, a superb swimmer from Australia, will call it quits after the 2008 Olympics, at the ripe old age of 25. Thorpe, nick-named the “Thorpedo” was outstanding in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, where he picked up two gold medals and a silver for participating in a riveting four man relay race against Michael Phelps and the United States team. He has placed a total of nine times in the Olympics, including five gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal.
Boston Celtic fans rejoice, it has been 14 years but the wait is finally over. The Celtics are back in action with the white forward who can shoot the rock, the player they have been looking for since Larry Bird retired. Silly Celtic fans, and to think you guys thought you had to tank this season and wait until the 2006 draft to get Adam Morrison from Gonzaga. The architects of this deal are former members of the Celtic championship days, T-Wolves GM is Kevin McHale, and Celtics Executive Director of Basketball Operations is Danny Ainge.
The breakdown of the deal is the Celtics receiving Wally Szczerbiak, Michael Olowokandi, Dwayne Jones and future first round pick in exchange for Ricky Davis, Mark Blount, Marcus Banks, Justin Reed and two second round picks. The T-Wolves were able to unload Szczerbiak’s huge contract and free up some cap room, and also traded him at his highest market value; as he has been playing well so far this year.
The first thing that comes to mind in this deal is that Kevin Garnett is going to experiment with yet another sidekick. So far in Garnett’s career sidekicks included: Stephon Marbury, then had to downgrade to Terrell Brandon, Joe Smith, Szczerbiak, and finally success with Cassell and Sprewell. If only Marbury was more patient and was willing to share the spotlight with Garnett, the T-Wolves wouldn’t be having the same problem they’ve had for the last 10 years. Garnett/ Marbury would’ve been the Stockton/ Malone combination of their era.
“This is it,” Lemieux said, “and it hurts.”
The end of Lemieux NHL career was announced on Tuesday, January 24th, 2005. Limieux stated that unlike most players that retire, his reason was not because his heart wasn’t in the game, but rather, his heart did not allow him to play. Limieux, the 13 time All-Star learned in December that he had atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat that can cause his pulse to flutter wildly and must be controlled by medication. He ended his career with 690 goals and 1,033 assists for 1,723 points, the 7th point getter all time. For the time being, Lemieux doesn’t need to worry about passing the mantle down to number 1 draft pick, Sidney Crosby.
(Thanks, T-Rex!)
