The battle of the basement dwellers

Ales HemskyIt’s the proverbial ‘Clash of the whatever-the-opposite-of-a-Titan-is’ this Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada. The Toronto Maple Leafs, who sit last in the Eastern Conference will welcome the Edmonton Oilers, who are last in the Western Conference, into the Air Canada Centre for an epic clash of mediocrity. These two teams lead the league in worst goal differential, goals allowed, and best golf score by points; none of which are categories they’d wish to lead though.

Leafs fans are excited that the team has won three of their last four games. However, each of those wins came after regulation time, which means they gave up a point for every two they earned. Alas, that only matters if you think the Leafs still stand a chance to make the playoffs. If you take it as hope for the future that the Leafs’ new core of young players might be on to something, then maybe three extra-time victories is in fact a good thing.

The Oilers on the other hand have just been awful. After going winless in January as part of a 13-game losing streak, they’ve not won more than two in a row. In their last five losses, they’ve given up an average of 4.8 goals per game. Dustin Penner and Sam Gagner are the only players who’ve shown any form of consistently decent offence, but neither is on pace to score even 60 points; and they lead the Oilers in scoring. There’s not a lot of hope out in northern Alberta these days.

The simple truth is that neither of these teams have a hope of making the playoffs. It’s only a matter of time before they’re mathematically eliminated as well. So why is the CBC choosing to play this game live nationally as opposed to Montreal and Boston? Ottawa and Vancouver? The rivalry between the teams in the first game or the fact that Vancouver hasn’t played a home game since January is certainly a better storyline to feature than the two worst teams in hockey.
