Rollins back from injury, may make All-Star lineup
Are the Philadelphia Phillies starting to come back around? With a 7-3 record in their last 10 games, the injury-plagued Phillies share the best record with the Mets for the last week and a half. The team also got a shot in the arm when former All-Star Jimmy Rollins rejoined the team on Tuesday in advance of their three-game sweep against the Cleveland Indians. Rollins is a welcome offensive and defensive improvement at shortstop that the Phillies have been lacking this season.
Rollins only had one hit in nine at bats in his two games back, but that one was the first game-winning home run in his career on Wednesday night. It also seems to have been enough to help launch Rollins up the All-Star voting chart. Despite only having played in 14 games this season, Rollins is right behind Florida’s Hanley Ramirez in fan voting for the starting shortstop position at this year’s All-Star game in Anaheim.
Giving the fans the choice of whom they want to see in the All-Star game isn’t a terrible idea, but fans shouldn’t be picking their players based on the criteria they appear to be doing so. This isn’t a popularity contest, yet still, Rollins is right up there on the list. You can be sure that if he’s not chosen by the fans as a starter, Rollins won’t be there, which should tell you something.
If you don’t see a problem with this, you’re probably a Rollins fan. The fact that this guy will play the equivalent of less than a month of baseball and may be a starting shortstop in the All-Star game is a farce. There’s nothing wrong with Rollins as a player, he’s fantastic at what he does, but what he’s done in 2010 isn’t enough to warrant his entry into the game. If Rollins takes the field in Anaheim on July 13, you can consider it confirmation that what was once one of baseball’s most prestigious events has been cheapened beyond salvation.
