Redding Yanked from Rockies

Tim ReddingThe Yankees have added some more depth to their system, as they signed free agent Tim Redding to a minor league contract. That’s right, the same Tim Redding who woke up as a member in the Colorado Rockies organization, was released outright and went to bed waiting for his name to be stitched onto the back of a Yankees uniform. It’s not the traditional way to see a player switch allegiances, but as long as he still has a job, Redding surely won’t complain.

Redding was picked up by the Rockies on a minor league deal for the 2010 season. Less than four months later, they threw him out the door. Redding didn’t even land before alternate offers were shoved in his face, as reports that the Dodgers and even some Korean teams were interested in his services. But by the time Redding was back up, the Yankees had the winning bid and now Redding will see himself in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre shortly.

Redding had a rough start to the season in Colorado Springs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Rockies. He was 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 25 innings as a starter. He struck out 21 and walked only five, but 34 hits in five starts was too many. Redding will likely have a bit easier time in the friendlier International League than he did in the Pacific Coast League, but barring injury to the parent club, he likely won’t find himself on New York’s 25-man roster anytime this season.

A former player for the Astros, Padres, Yankees, Nationals and Mets, the re-addition of Redding shouldn’t get anybody too excited. He’s never been able to keep consistent work in the big leagues, and has struggled greatly during his time at the top. The Yankees are likely only taking him to help eat up some innings and be a placeholder in case of injury. Redding is the type of guy you don’t think about until he screws up, and certainly won’t be the one you remember 10 years from now.
