Phillies Defeat Astros in Walk-off Fashion
It looked as though the Phillies bats would remain silent at the beginning of the 9th inning in Philadelphia. Houston Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon had shut them out through 8 innings, and all hope looked lost with Stros’ closer Jose Valverde coming on. However, the Phillies managed to score 4 runs to defeat Houston 4-3
The bottom of the 9th inning started with a solo pinch-hit home run off the bat of former Seattle Mariners prospect Chris Snelling. With the game now 4-1, Chase Utley was hit by a pitch to put a runner on first. Ryan Howard struck out swinging, but the next batter, Pat Burrell, countered with a 2 run home run to knot the game up at 3. By now the Astros were beginning to feel the pressure, as veteran backstop Brad Ausmus let a ball Geoff Jenkins struck out on get by him, to put a runner on first. New Phillie Pedro Feliz would then knock a double just past the outstrecthed glove of Carlos Lee, to plate Geoff Jenkins and give the Phillies a dramatic late innings victory.
“I felt like I could score,” Jenkins said. “The crowd was going berserk and once I got home, it was a tremendous feeling when you’re safe.”
Houston starting pitcher Shanw Chacon was inconsolable after the game.
“We’re here to win ballgames,” he said. “I could go out and throw seven innings and give up seven runs and it doesn’t matter.”
