Phil Kessel speaks out against coach Ron Wilson

Phil KesselPhil Kessel, the famously-anointed “chosen one” of the Maple Leafs organization seems to have had enough of it. At a practice in Toronto on Sunday, Kessel told reporters that that he and coach Ron Wilson “don’t really talk” and that it “might not be working out here.” Probably sensing that he had backed himself into a corner, he failed to elaborate on the comments. Could the shy forward’s patience with his team’s management have finally found its limits?

Kessel has been consistently and thoroughly thrown under the bus by Wilson for being a streaky goal scorer who hasn’t found the twine in two-thirds of Toronto’s games this season. But the revelation that Wilson and Kessel don’t speak much to each other is shocking, considering the fact that Kessel is supposed to be the cornerstone of a Leafs rebuilding plan. Then again, if you’ve ever heard Wilson in an interview, you wouldn’t want to speak with him either.

Can you really blame Kessel? He didn’t ask to be traded to Toronto, nor did he ever say that he’s worth the two first round and second round picks that Boston got for him; one of which turning out to be Tyler Seguin. Kessel has never said that he’s by far the best Maple Leaf skating out there, nor did he say he should have been selected as Toronto’s representative at the All-Star Game last week.

But speculation will run wild about who Kessel thinks isn’t “working out” in Toronto; whether it’s him or his coach. For the sake of the franchise, let’s hope it’s the latter, as Wilson has seemingly been the bane of the league when it comes to coaches. For the time being at least, Kessel has joined the masses of Leafs Nation as one of the many who aren’t willing to take any more of this mediocrity.
