New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays finish possible postseason preview
If the series between the Rays and Yankees is any indication, this year’s MLB playoffs may hold the series of the decade if the two aforementioned teams can claim victory over their Division Series opponents. New York visited Tampa Bay for a three-game set that saw the Rays take two out of three – and first place in the AL East – while managing to outscore the Bronx Bombers 12-11 in what may have been one of the most exciting; and important series’ of the season.
Monday’s game was everything it was meant to be and more. Dueling ace starters CC Sabathia and David Price went eight innings apiece, giving up five total hits without allowing a run. It took a walk-off, solo home run by Reid Brignac in the 11th to give the Rays the victory. This was the kind of game one matchup that many want to see in October between these two teams. A rematch is in order.
Tuesday’s game was one of those expected, high-scoring slugfests that seem to happen after pitcher’s duels. The Yanks edged the Rays 8-7 in another extra inning game, but it wasn’t as close as it seemed as the Rays were actually shut out in all but one inning. Then it was the rubber match on Wednesday in which Dan Johnson lifted his team onto his shoulders with a pair of homers to secure the win, as well as first place in the East once again.
The only disappointment in this series is that both of these teams are likely to make the postseason. A three-game affair like we saw would have been worth even more if either team actually had any doubt about their October chances. The Rays and Yankees will likely face the Twins and Rangers in the Division Series and here’s hoping that both come out on top so we can have an American League Championship Series with the two best teams playing winner-take-all baseball for a trip to the World Series.
