Mets Defeat Nats on Jackie Robinson Night
It was Jackie Robinson night at Shea Stadium on Tuesday night, all 25 Mets were wearing the number 42 on the backs of their jerseys. Despite all having the same number, the Mets shunned their anonymity with a 6-0 victory over the Washington Nationals to boost their record to 6-6, 2nd place in the National League East division
The Mets were led by 2005 1st round draft pick Mike Pelfrey, who had a performance worth remembering. Pelfrey went 7 innings, giving up no runs, 5 hits with 4 punchouts. His outing notched him his 2nd victory of the season.
“I pitched with conviction,” Pelfrey said. “Just get it to the glove. No more nibbling. Here it is. ‘Do what you want, I’m gonna get an out.”
Pelfrey is also gathering confidence from his teammates.
“I think everybody in here knows Pelfrey has it in him,” third baseman David Wright said. “He’s beginning to get that swagger.”
The Mets began their scoring int he very 1st inning, when David Wright had a 2 run shot against journeyman Odalis Perez. After that, however, the Mets blew several opportunities and left several men on base before their next run. Just when Met fans were concerned whether their team had any offense left, David Wright doubled to deep left field to plate shortstop Jose Reyes, who went 4-5 on the night. Later on that inning, Carlos Beltran would single to score Wright. Wright would finish the night with 5 of the team’s 6 RBI’s.
“[Perez] made a mistake on David and paid for it,” Nationals manager Manny Acta said, “but other than that, he gave us a chance to win—six innings, two runs. Just a very good outing for us.”
Emotions were certainly running high on Tuesday for one member of the Nats; Lastings Milledge. This game was his first trip back to Shea Stadium since being traded from the Mets in exchange for Ryan Church and Brian Schneider. In the 1st inning Milledge hit a double. Perhaps foolishly, Milledge then attempted to steal 3rd base, and was thrown out easily by the catcher Schneider.
“At least [Milledge] didn’t do it so early in the count,” Acta said. “He gave Zimmerman about four pitches before he tried to steal. I’d rather he be aggressive than non-aggressive. Next time, if we don’t think it’s the right call, we’ll just put the stop sign on him.”
