Mike Comrie celebrates after scoring a goal
The New York Islanders aren’t quite finished yet in 2008. Last night the Isles won their 4th consecutive game, a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks. Through 2 periods, the Sharks were winning 2-0 on goals from Joe Thornton and Marcel Goc. However the Islanders picked up their play in the third period, scoring 3 goals from Andy Hilbert, Mike Comrie and defenseman Freddy Meyer. The goal was Meyer’s 2nd goal of the year, the first one being an empty-netter.

“I was just trying to put it on net,” Meyer said. “Get the monkey off my back? I’m just going to try to keep shooting the puck. It was good, anytime you beat a goalie, it’s always a little sweeter.”

Late in the game Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro saved the game with a miraculous save against a shot from the Sharks’ Joe Thornton.

“It seemed like we had the game right there,” Thornton said. “Three mistakes cost us, and that was the game. I thought we played pretty good for 50 minutes.

“Guys need to realize that the playoff push started. Every team is good, and we have to go into each game thinking that way.”

With the loss, the San Jose Sharks are now 31-20-8, and in 3rd place in the Pacific Division. Riding the momentum of 4 consecutive victories, the Islanders are 28-25-7, still 5th place in the Atlantic Division. They have 63 points on the season, where the first place New Jersey Devils has 73.
