The power of Twitter has struck again. Rumors of an engagement between Ottawa Senators forward Mike Fisher and country music superstar Carrie Underwood popped up all over the place after a friend of Underwood’s family announced on his Twitter page congratulating the pair on their recent engagement. Fisher and Underwood have been linked together romantically for about a year. Underwood is regularly in attendance in the luxury boxes at Scotiabank Place.

The 26-year old singer from Oklahoma won season four of American Idol and became an instant country music sensation. She has won four Grammy Awards, five American Music Awards, 14 Billboard Music Awards, as well as many others. She has three studio albums. Her debut, Some Hearts, has been certified 7x multi-platinum in the States. Her follow-up album Carnival Ride is 2x multi-platinum. She is currently promoting her third LP, Play On, released in November, 2009.

Canadian-born Fisher has been an integral part of the Senators’ offense. Prior to last season, he scored more than 20 goals three years in a row. Last season saw a tremendous drop in production though. He only scored 13 goals and 32 points. He’s picked it up this year and is on pace to shatter his career scoring highs. In 33 games, he has 15 goals and 29 points with just 19 penalty minutes. He has been directly responsible for the Sens’ exceptional performance so far this season.

While no additional details have been released to the public, hearts are certainly breaking on both sides of the border today. Impressively, the couple has managed to keep their romantic lives out of the public eye, but attention will definitely be given to this story by various media outlets both inside and outside of sports. Both Fisher and Underwood are about to endure a new form of media attention unfamiliar to both of them, but they’ll do it together. No date is currently set for the wedding.
