Now that Dan Uggla has gone hitless for once, can we please remember that the Atlanta Braves are in a playoff race? As everybody must know, Uggla went 0-for-3 against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday to snap his consecutive games with a hit streak at 33, but with all the attention Uggla’s been getting over the last month and a half, you wouldn’t know that the Braves currently have a four-game lead over the San Francisco Giants for the NL wild card.

Uggla also broke Atlanta’s franchise record on Friday night, which is definitely something worth celebrating, but let’s not forget that he didn’t even get two-thirds of the way to Joe DiMaggio’s all-time record of 56 games. That in itself goes to show how tough a lengthy hitting streak can be and lends some support to the argument that DiMaggio’s is one of the baseball records that will never be broken.

What’s almost as impressive as a 33-game hitting streak though is the fact that now that it’s over, Uggla’s .231 batting average still looks pretty bad. He started the streak on July 5, at which point he was hitting .173, so you have to give him some credit for raising it more than 50 points this late in the season. He also added 15 home runs and 33 RBIs to his total during the streak as well.

With the streak in the rearview mirror, the Braves can now remember that they have a wild card position to defend and Uggla can start a new streak. Don’t expect it to last as long though. He’s only the 23rd player in history to have a streak of 30 or more games. However, if he does begin a new streak, hopefully he can keep it running until Thursday, when it’s Dan Uggla Bobblehead night in Atlanta.
