Canadiens Deal Cristobal Huet to Capitals
Goalie Cristobal Huet was traded today from the Montreal Canadiens to the Washington Capitals in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick in 2009. The Capitals will be Huet’s 3rd career organization, the first being the Los Angeles Kings. The Capitals are now packed at the Goalie position, with other goalies Olaf Kolzig and Brent Johnson.
“When I got the call, I was shocked,” Huet told the TSN network of Canada. “I had three great years here and it was a lot of fun. It is a very classy organization (The Canadiens), it’s a great city and a great place to play hockey.”
In 170 career NHL games, Huet’s sporting a 72-59-11-13 record with a 2.49 GAA and a .917 save percentage. Cristobal’s age (32 years old) may have been a factor in Huet’s being dealt from Montreal.
“I think that we have spent a lot of this year really getting a clear evaluation if Cristobal was somebody we would go on for the long term,” Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey said. “We hadn’t discuss any opportunity to extend his contract, we were looking for information from him - according to his play - that he would be someone that we could go on long term with.”
The goalkeeping duties may now go to reserve goalie Carey Price. Price, 20 years old, has a 12-9-3 record this season. Price was the 5th overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. Price’s best game this season was on November 27th, when he made 43 saves out of 46 attempted.
