Ben Wallace Dealt in Blockbuster Trade
The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired one of the game’s great centers. As a part of a 3 team trade, the Cavs acquired Ben Wallace, Guard Joe Smith, Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West from the Seattle Supersonics. Cleveland also acquired the rights to Chicago’s 2nd round draft pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. The Chicago Bulls will receive Larry Hughes, Drew Gooden, Cedric Simmons and Shannon Brown from Cleveland. And the Sonics get Chris Duhon, Ira Newble, Donyell Marshall, and guard Adrian Griffin.
The trade was reportedly completed right before the EST 3:00 pm trading deadline.
“It’s one of those things you come in and play hard and try to give what you give and not worry about what you can’t control,” Wallace said. “We had some guys that were banged up and beat up a bit. It was tough for us to get everybody on the floor and try to play basketball.”
Though dealing away a center who’s averaging 8.8 rebounds per game, the Chicago Bulls made out quite nicely in this deal. They received Larry Hughes, who’s averaging 12.3 points per game, Drew Gooden who’s nabbing 8.3 rebounds per game and scoring 11.3, promising forward Cedric Simmons and 22 year old guard Shannon Brown who’s scoring an average of 7 points a game.
Wallace is now relieved to not have to hear talks of Chicago trying to move him and his huge salary (60 million dollars), and can focus on playing basketball for a competing team.
“It is a relief,” Wallace said. “I just have to play basketball.”
