Angels Defeat Yankees On Day of Trading Deadline
Pudge Rodriguez made his New York Yankees debut yesterday, but it was of no use against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Halos downed the Bronx Bombers 12-6, with help from homers off the bat of Torii Hunter, Juan Rivera, and Vladimir Guerrero. Andy Pettitte took the loss for the Yanks, in his poor outing he went 5.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and nine earned runs.
“You got athletes on this team,” said Hunter,. “We’re Hyenas. We take advantage of the weak link. You make a mistake and we’re gone.”
Pettitte’s disastrous inning came in the 3rd, when both Torii Hunter and Juan Rivera hit three run home runs to bust the game wide open. Pettitte coasted until the 6th inning, when Chone figgins hit an RBI single to knock Andy out of the game. After Chris Britton came on for long relief, Vladimir Guerrero hit the A’s third three run home run of the game. After the game, Pettitte said he never felt comfortable on the mound.
“Didn’t feel comfortable from the get-go,” Pettitte said. “I didn’t keep anybody off base. Top of their lineup. Bottom of their lineup. Didn’t keep the guys that have a little bit of power in the ballpark. So just didn’t do anything right tonight. I was missing with everything. It was a bad night, that’s for sure.”
This game was of note, as it was Ivan Rodriguez’s first as a member of the Yanks. On the day before the trading deadline Pudge was dealt to New York in exchange for hard throwing reliever Kyle Farnsworth. Rodriguez went 1-3 with a single.
“It was a long day. I’m a little tired right now,” Pudge said after the game.
