Open The Wallets: NBA Free Agency Signings

Peja StojakovicWith Free Agency season open, some NBA teams are shelling out the dough for players they hope will fulfill their needs for the coming season.  Here’s a recap of millionaire ballers that just got richer.

BREAKING OUT TO A NEW TEAM

Peja Stojakovic signs with the New Orleans Hornets
This deal makes a load of sense.  The Hornets get a legitimate scoring threat from the perimeter who is easily capable of averaging 20+ points per game in Stojakovic.  What does Stojakovic get?  A super-talented point guard that will penetrate, draw the defense, and pass off the ball to the open man in Rookie of the Year, Chris Paul.  Win-win, if you ask me.  Although, I’m sure the Indiana Pacers are cursing Stojakovic right now after he kept saying he wanted to re-sign with them.  C’est la vie.  That’s the business of the NBA.

Vladimir Radmanovic signs with the Los Angeles Lakers
Sorry, had to go with the Serbs back-to-back.  Radmanovic, a one-dimensional player (three-points galore), hopes that the Zen Master, Phil Jackson can ramp up his game and make him a monster on the boards and down in the post… okay, I’m TOTALLY kidding here.  That will never happen.  Never.

Speedy Claxton signs with the Atlanta Hawks
Oh, okay, I see.  Now the Hawks passing up on Randy Foye and Marcus Williams in the draft makes sense!  They knew they were going to sign Claxton to take the point.  Not bad.  I still would have chosen one of the aforementioned draft picks, but as long as they have a passing point to pass the pill to the super athletes on that team, it’s all good.

Bobby Jackson signs with the New Oreans Hornets
Jackson will provide solid bench play at the one and give Paul some good blow.  No, not that kind of blow… or THAT kind either.  It means Jackson will allow Paul to get some rest and display that ubiquitous veteran leadership.

STAYING PUT WITH THEIR CURRENT TEAM

Nene re-signs with the Denver Nuggets
What?!?!?!  I’m not incredulous about Nene re-signing with the Nugs.  I’m surprised at the amount and length of the contract - six years for 60 million bucks.  Nene played all of three minutes last season and suffered a knee injury, which is worse for basketball players.  I believe we are starting to see the wheels fall off.  I seriously hope no one trades for current Nug, Kenyon Martin.  I’d like to see the organization validate the signings of Nene and Martin because one of them is going to come off the bench.  Imagine, ten million dollars a season for coming off the bench.  DAMN my genetics!  What couldn’t I have been taller?

Carmelo Anthony re-signs with the Denver Nuggets
Speaking of the Nuggets, they gave Anthony a max contract and while I wonder if he’s worth it, he’s been more than good for the Nugs.  Anthony is the face of the Nuggets, and Michael Jordan-backed.  Nuff said.

Jason Terry re-signs with the Dallas Mavericks
Thanks to the recent playoff performances where Terry simply just went off, he is the owner of a new six-year contract for over 50 million, which is a weekend getaway for Mavs owner, Mark Cuban.  In any case, this is a good signing and almost a no-brainer.  Terry is Robin to Dirk Nowitzki’s Batman, keeping the heat off of Dirk and being a very legit second scorer.

Okay, that’s it for me… I’m spent!  Oh, by the way, yes I know about Ben Wallace and the Bulls.  I’m saving my comments for when the deal is officially official.  Have a great Fourth of July!  I know the above-mentioned players will.
