MLB Deadline Trades

Julio LugoThe non-waiver trading deadline for MLB came and went and here’s what went down:

- Los Angeles Dodgers get Julio Lugo; Tampa Bay Devil Rays get minor-league 3B Joel Guzman and OF Sergio Pedroza.
- Los Angeles Dodgers get RHP Greg Maddux; Chicago Cubs get SS/3B Cesar Izturis.
COMMENTS: The Dodgers acquire a great offensive shortstop in Lugo who should get on base and allow hitters such as J.D. Drew and when healthy, Jeff Kent and Nomar Garciaparra to knock him in.  Rafael Furcal and Lugo should form a dangerous 1-2 punch at the top of the order.  Concerning Maddux, he’s a Hall of Fame pitcher that just may have enough in his tank to get down in L.A.
- New York Mets get RHP Roberto Hernandez and LHP Oliver Perez; Pittsburgh Pirates get OF Xavier Nady.
COMMENTS: This was a necessary move for the Mets as 8th inning specialist Duaner Sanchez was in a taxi cab accident over the weekend and could possibly be out for the season.  Hernandez pitched well with the Mets last year and must be happy to be back with the contenders.  Perez is an interesting addition as he is still young and it was only two years ago when he dominated the N.L.  It’ll be interesting to see what pitching coach Rick Petersen can do with him.

- New York Yankees get 1B/OF Craig Wilson; Pirates get RHP Shawn Chacon.
COMMENTS: Man, Wilson can’t get a break, can he?  If he thought he had to play hard to get playing time with the Pirates, imagine what he’s gotta do to get on the field with the all-star Yankees team.

- San Diego Padres get 2B Todd Walker and cash; Cubs get minor-league RHP Jose Ceda.
COMMENTS: Finally, after a lot of talk during the season, the Cubs trade Walker.

- St. Louis Cardinals get RHP Jorge Sosa; Atlanta Braves get minor-league RHP Rich Scalamandre.
COMMENTS: With the acquisition of Bob Wickman, the Braves didn’t need Sosa anymore… not sure the Cards do either.

- Texas Rangers get RHP Kip Wells; Pirates get minor-league pitcher Jesse Chavez.
- Texas Rangers get DH Matt Stairs; Kansas City Royals get minor-league RHP Joselo Diaz.
COMMENTS: If you ask me, the Wells deal could be a sleeper type of trade for the Rangers.  Wells will probably definitely never meet the hype he had early in his career, but there’s talent there. Stairs is a solid OPS hitter and adds some depth in the batting order.

- Colorado Rockies get LHP Jeremy Affeldt and RHP Denny Bautista; Royals get 1B Ryan Shealy and RHP Scott Dohmann.
COMMENTS: I’m happy that Shealy will finally get a chance to shine because he was never going to with Todd Helton in Colorado.  Of course, he’ll be playing for the Royals.

- Detroit Tigers get 1B Sean Casey; Pirates get minor-league P Brian Rogers.
COMMENTS: Casey could be a difference-maker at some point down the line should (okay, when) the Tigers make the postseason.  He’s a savvy hitter and could be clutch for the Tigers.  With the move, it was definitely time to say “look out below” to early season success story, Chris Shelton.

- Cincinnati Reds get LHP Rheal Cormier; Philadelphia Phillies get RHP Justin Germano.
COMMENTS: I really don’t have much to say about this as this was a very minor deal in my book.

- Reds get RHP Kyle Lohse; Minnesota Twins get minor-league RHP Zach Ward.
COMMENTS: Don’t care much for this deal either, which is probably why I have these two trades at the bottom.
