Javy Lopez Traded From Baltimore To Boston

Javy LopezWelcome to Beantown, Mr. Lopez, your services will come in quite handy.  Since C Jason Varitek went down to injury a couple of days, which required arthroscopic surgery for the Red Sox’ captain, the Red Sox needed to make a move to try to replace Varitek.  Let’s be honest, Doug Mirabelli wasn’t going to cut it, especially considering all the moves rival, the New York Yankees did before and on the trading deadline - acquiring OF Bobby Abreu and SP Cory Lidle from the Philadelphia Phillies and C/1B/OF Craig Wilson from the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Javy Lopez, a former All-Star and hitter of 43 dingers while with the Atlanta Braves should improve the offense - definitely from Mirabelli, and possibly compared to Varitek who was having an off year.  With the emergence of free-agent acquisition, Ramon Hernandez, the Baltimore Orioles had no problem trading Lopez.  The Orioles will receive the proverbial “player to be named later.”
