Dealing To The Dish: American League Weekend Edition 6.24-6.25
The following games take place on American League territory. Saturday and Sunday’s probable starters are listed:
Philadelphia Phillies @ Boston Red Sox
SAT: B. Myers (5-3, 3.77) vs. C. Schilling (9-2, 3.55)
SUN: C. Lidle (4-6, 5.00) vs. T. Wakefield (5-8, 3.82)
We know Myers can beat his wife, but can he beat the Red Sox and Curt Schilling? And despite pitching well, Wakefield just isn’t getting the offensive support to win more games.
Houston Astros @ Chicago White Sox
SAT: T. Buchholz (4-6, 5.82) vs. J. Garland (6-3, 5.58)
SUN: R. Oswalt (6-3, 3.32) vs. J. Vázquez (8-4, 4.43)
The Astros lost the first game of the series in this rematch of last season’s World Series participants. Sunday’s night game should be fun to watch with Roy Oswalt and Javier Vazquez on the hill.
Cincinnati Reds @ Cleveland Indians
SAT: B. Arroyo (9-3, 2.47) vs. P. Byrd (5-5, 4.78)
SUN: E. Ramírez (2-6, 3.69) vs. J. Sowers (0-0, 0.00)
Boy, couldn’t the Red Sox use Bronson Arroyo right now. Especially considering how well he’s doing in the Queen City. Watch rookie Jeremy Sowers on Sunday. He could really be special.
Florida Marlins @ New York Yankees
SAT: J. Johnson (6-4, 2.01) vs. S. Chacón (4-1, 5.89)
SUN: D. Willis (4-6, 4.19) vs. M. Mussina (8-3, 3.42)
The Yankees took the first game in this rematch of the 2003 World Series. On Saturday, they face Josh Johnson and, honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had the success that other Josh (Beckett) did in the 2003 series.
New York Mets @ Toronto Blue Jays
SAT: O. Hernández (4-6, 5.23) vs. R. Halladay (8-2, 2.94)
SUN: S. Trachsel (5-4, 4.67) vs. J. Towers (1-8, 8.76)
Whoa! The New York Mets offense faces a tough challenge in Roy Halladay on Saturday. Or would that be the other way around? Either way, I’ll be interested to see Doc Halladay dealing to the likes of Carlos Delgado, his former teammate, and David Wright, who is on pace to easily winning Player of the Month awards. Thanks!
Washington Nationals @ Baltimore Orioles
SAT: R. Ortiz (5-5, 5.27) vs. A. Loewen (0-2, 7.82)
SUN: L. Hernández (5-8, 5.64) vs. D. Cabrera (4-4, 4.64)
Peter Angelos, the Orioles owner, must have been laughing last night when his Orioles team took down the cross-district rivals. It was a close game, 2-1, and Nationals starter John Patterson’s first start since coming off the DL. Oh, and Chris Ray is making it easier to forget about B.J. Ryan.
St. Louis Cardinals @ Detroit Tigers
SAT: J. Suppan (6-4, 5.07) vs. K. Rogers (10-3, 3.17)
SUN: S. Ponson (4-2, 5.30) vs. J. Bonderman (7-4, 3.82)
He’s back and he’s picked up from where he left off. I’m talking about Albert Pujols, who went 4-for-4 last night, including his 26th MLB-leading homerun. Ah, yes, the man we all know and love is trying to make up for lost time. Let’s see if the young, Jeremy Bonderman can come back with another solid performance after a very good one earlier this week. It’s all about consistency, baby.
Milwaukee Brewers @ Kansas City Royals
SAT: D. Davis (4-4, 4.69) vs. B. Duckworth (0-1, 3.18)
SUN: R. Helling (0-1, 11.81) vs. M. Redman (4-4, 5.95)
Okay, Mr. Davis, I’ve drafted you in several fantasy leagues thinking you’ll be striking out dudes, eating innings, and maybe be lucky enough to win about 15 games. So far you’ve been so up and down my neck is hurting. Please put a string of strong outings together. Starting today would be nice.
Chicago Cubs @ Minnesota Twins
SAT: M. Prior (0-1, 17.18) vs. B. Bonser (1-1, 5.81)
SUN: S. Marshall (4-5, 4.97) vs. B. Radke (5-7, 5.84)
OUCH! Look at that Mark Prior ERA. To say he had a bad debut for the Cubbies would be an understatment. As long as Prior stays healthy, he’ll have a leash to get things right. But, that’s the problem. Mark Prior hasn’t been the model of staying healthy. The Twins are rolling right now, which is not good news for the Cubbies.
Atlanta Braves @ Tampa Bay Devil Rays
SAT: L. Cormier (2-2, 6.57) vs. T. Corcoran (0-0, 2.70)
SUN: C. James (0-0, 2.38) vs. M. Hendrickson (4-7, 3.75)
Carl Crawford has really turned it on lately. In the month of June he is hitting .362, with five homeruns, 11 RBI, 14 runs, and a 1.070 OPS. My man is simply raking the ball. In any case, the Braves ended their 10game losing streak last night against the D-Rays, but it was close all the way until the end.
Enjoy the games!
