Dealing To The Dish: American League 7.7.06

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Editorial, MLB,

Carl CrawfordBaltimore Orioles @ Cleveland Indians
K. Benson (9-6, 4.35) vs. C.C. Sabathia (6-4, 3.90)
The Indians have been disappointing and so has Sabathia who started off hotter than Elisha Cuthbert kissing Scarlett Johansson (don’t you wish you pervs!), but slowed down like we probably should have known considering that a person with a gut like his has no endurance to run a marathon like the baseball season is.  On the other hand, Benson has been steady, unlike his wife’s mental state.

New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Devil Rays
J. Wright (4-5, 4.61) vs. J. Seo (0-1, 3.86)
The D-Rays just gave it to the Boston Red Sox, taking three out of four in their recent series.  Next up?  The Bankees.  How will this small market team do against the “Evil Empire”?  Probably the same as they always do, surprising the shiznit out of them and taking te series.  Now, if only management was smart enough to trade some of their youngsters (although Carl Crawford should ALWAYS be untouchable to trade) to make the team better and competitive for the next few seasons.  However, it seems I’ll be part of the geriatric crew and living down there before that happens.

Toronto Blue Jays @ Kansas City Royals
A.J. Burnett (1-2, 4.30) vs. L. Hudson (1-3, 7.24)
I’m a big Burnett fan, but with his injury history, sometimes you have to be a Burnett hater.  Right now Burnett is healthy (cross fingers that he stays that way) and trying to get into a groove.  If he and Roy “Doc” Halladay stay healthy, Ted Lilly continues to pitch well, and the offense continues to mash (where are you Alex Rios, we miss you), the Jays can take the A.L. East as crazy as that sounds.  The Royals?  The only division they would take is the A.L. Sucktral division.  Unfortunately (or fortunately) there’s no such thing.

Boston Red Sox @ Chicago White Sox
J. Lester (3-0, 3.08) vs. M. Buehrle (9-5, 3.86)
Who is this Jon Lester?  A highly regarded prospect that could be a difference maker for the Red Sox since their pitching past Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, and Tim Wakefield is very weak.  But the youngster has done well so far and goes up against a veteran pitcher in Mark Buehrle and a veteran batting order that is simply killing the ball.  And what the heck is Jermaine Dye drinking?  I guess it must be the same thing as Jim Thome.  In any case, this series very well could be a postseason preview between these Soxes (sp?), so pay attention.

Minnesota Twins @ Texas Rangers
C. Silva (4-8, 6.62) vs. J. Wasdin (1-1, 3.86)
It’s a good thing Carlos Silva is a groundball pitcher because to succeed in Ameriquest, you’ll need to keep the ball down so that you don’t see it sailing over the fence.  Regardless, the Rangers have a pretty group of hitters that can actually get better once Mark Teixeira figures out how to crush the ball again.

Los Angeles Angels @ Oakland Athletics
J. Lackey (6-5, 3.12) vs. B. Zito (8-5, 3.28)
This is an excellent pitching matchup between Lackey and Zito, and more importantly, a A.L. West division contest that can play a big part in how the division is won at the end of the season.  Currently the A’s are at the top and the Angels at the bottom of the A.L. West.  However, with only five games separating both teams, the standings can change quickly.

Detroit Tigers @ Seattle Mariners
J. Bonderman (7-4, 3.65) vs. J. Pineiro (6-7, 5.86)
It’s good to see Jeremy Bonderman bringing it this season because he disappointed a bit last season after his breakout ‘04 campaign.  Hopefully his youth and inexperience doesn’t get the better of him as the season goes along.  But something tells me that the veterans on the club won’t let Bonderman fizzle out as he did last season.  Regarding Pineiro, there are rumors that he will be traded to the New York Yankees for Shawn Chacon.  Umm, that doesn’t really say much about Pineiro.
