Dealing To The Dish: American League 6.21.06

C.C. Sabathia bringing the heatInterleague games being played in American League ballparks:

Florida Marlins @ Baltimore Orioles
R. Nolasco (5-3, 3.06) vs. E. Bedard (6-6, 5.60)
- Don’t look now, but the Marlins are in the midst of a big winning streak and will look to extend it to ten tonight at Camden Yards.  Not bad for a team with 18 rookies on their squad.  It’s hard to believe that they are in third in N.L. East with the defending division champion, Atlanta Braves, in last place.  Meanwhile, the Orioles have lost five of their last seven and will probably be without Melvin Mora, who suffered a knee contusion after being hit by a pitch.

Washington Nationals @ Boston Red Sox
S. Hill (1-1, 2.42) vs. J. Lester (1-0, 3.48)
- The Red Sox have won five straight, including a sweep of the abovementioned Braves.  The Nationals are 3-7 in their last 10 games and have allowed the Marlins to move past them in the standings.  Both teams throw out rookie pitchers who have been effective in only a smattering of starts.

Chicago Cubs @ Cleveland Indians
C. Zambrano (5-3, 2.82) vs. C. Sabathia (5-3, 3.08)
- Zambrano has started 15 games, but only received a decision in just over half of them.  This is unfortunate as Zambrano has been pitching stellar this season, leading the league in Batting Average Against (.187) and in strikeouts (102) tied with the New York Mets’ Pedro Martinez.  Zambrano will try to make it five road start wins in a row against the Indians.  Sabathia started off hot, putting up a 5-1 record and a 1.71 ERA in is first seven starts.  In his last three outings - 0-2 and 6.88 ERA.  The portly lefty is 8-4 with a 3.82 ERA in interleague games, never facing the Cubbies.

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Tampa Bay Devil Rays
B. Webb (8-2, 2.37) vs. J. Shields (3-0, 3.13)
- Webb, who raced out to an 8-0 record has lost two straight games and looks to get back to his previous winning ways.  Rookie James Shields is on a three-game winning streak himself, going undefeated in June.  This looks to be a pretty good pitching matchup and should be a good one to watch.

St. Louis Cardinals @ Chicago White Sox
J. Marquis (9-4, 4.55) vs. M. Buehrle (7-4, 3.13)
- Ouch!  Last night, the White Sox spanked the Cardinals to the tune of 20 runs, nine of them given up by Mark Mulder who lasted 2.1 innings.  Hopefully they didn’t use up all of their runs for the week or anything, but I don’t think so.  Tonight, Jason Marquis will try to hold the Pale Hose’s offense down, while the Sox’s ace, Mark Buehrle takes the hill against a Albert Pujols-less Cardinals offense.  Although, players like Juan Encarnarcion and Scott Spezio have stepped up.

San Diego Padres @ Texas Rangers
C. Young (6-3, 3.27) vs. J. Rheinecker (2-1, 3.60)
- Young comes back to visit his former team that traded him to the Padres for the injured Adam Eaton.  The Rangers must be kicking themselves for moving Young, who for extended periods has been unhittable, particularly this month.  For June, Young is 2-0, owning a 1.42 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, .154 BAA, and 21 K versus seven walks in 19.0 innings pitched.  The Rangers have been getting better than expected pitching from their starters, but could have been so much stronger with Young.  Oh well, the Padres gain.

Pittsburgh Pirates @ Kansas City Royals
I. Snell (7-4, 4.71) vs. M. Wood (3-2, 4.69)
- Wood takes the hill for the Royals hoping to be the team’s first four-game winner.  FOUR!  This is how sad the state of affairs for the Pirates are.  For comparison’s sake, the Pirates have three pitchers with at least four wins.  The Pirates are in a six-game slide, so maybe Wood gets it done tonight.  Ugh… does this game really matter?
