Chase Utley Watch: 33 Games
Well, it didn’t take Phillies 2B Chase Utley long at all to extend his hitting streak to 33 games. In the top of the first inning, on an 0-1 count Utley singled up the middle to centerfield against the St. Louis Cardinals Jeff Suppan. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the streak is tied for the ninth-longest in NL history with Rogers Hornsby (1922) and George Davis (1893).
Utley will try to make it 34 in a row tomorrow night against the Cards’ recent pitching acquisition, Jeff Weaver, who isn’t having much success in the N.L. either, after a brief stint with the Los Angeles Angels earlier this season. Utley and Weaver have never faced each other in their careers.
