AFC South Preview: Houston Texans

Tony Gonzalez I'll see you later.Part of the reason why I thought it was prudent of the Texans to pass on RB Reggie Bush was because of the presence of RB Domanick Davis, a back who could get the all-purpose yards as he was adept in running the ball and catching it.  And, he was young, so its not like Bush would have been replacing someone like the New York Jets RB Curtis Martin.  But, with Davis’ health questions getting to the point where there were rumors of him being cut (instead, he’ll probably just be put on Injured Reserve), not taking Bush is looking like a really bad deal.  Almost as bad as Mel Gibson being revealed as a bigot towards sugary breasts.

But, have no fear, here comes RB Wali Lundy… who?  Don’t worry if you don’t know who he is as he’s a rookie that was drafted in the sixth round out of the University of Virginia.  Lundy ran away from the competition this preseason… get it?  Ran away… nevermnd.  In any case, the powerhouse duo of Vernand Morency and Antowain Smith could not keep pace with Lundy and are now headed during the bench.

So, as if DE Mario Williams didn’t have enough pressure on him being the number one overall pick, he’ll have to deal with questions of hindsight about the Texans passing on Bush to take him.  If Williams can get passed all of the noise off the field and still do well, he’ll have been well worth the number one overall pick.  Granted, DEs don’t get as many chances to shine as RBs, so it’ll be difficult no matter what for the big fella.

Flat out, the O-Line stinks.  QB David Carr ate more dirt than I ate Snickers bars when my wife went on vacation.  Trust me, it’s a lot.  In any case, the Texans addressed their O-line problems during the draft taking both OT Charles Spencer and OT Eric Winston in the third round of the draft.  Hopefully, the rookies can step it up, so that Carr doesn’t get stepped on.

Offseason acquisition, WR Eric Moulds, is a godsend for WR Andre Johnson who, as the Texans number one receiver, was always facing double-teams because of a lack of a serious threat lining up on the other side.  Well, Moulds is a threat, even at his age and Johnson can only benefit.  I would think that Johnson will break out this season.

The Texans D-line is basically the opposite as the O-line as there is some real potential here.  In addition to Williams, there is the upside of Anthony Weaver and his athletic ability and motor.  Robaire Smith and Jason Babin join Williams and Weaver on the line.  The LB corp is pedestrian at best with Shantee Orr, Morlon Greenwood, and in all likelihood, rookie DeMeco Ryans starting behind the line.  The secondary has a superstar in the making with CB Dunta Robinson, but that’s about it after him.

The Texans have nowhere to go but up and I’d expect they’re good enough to double their win total from last season.  Okay, so that would only be four wins, but it’s better than two, isn’t it?
