AFC East Preview: Buffalo Bills

Willis McGaheeAs bad as the New York Jets QB situation is, the Bills situation isn’t much better.  In fact, it might even be worse.  QB J.P. Losman got a shot to be the starting QB last season and there was much hope that he’d pull through, but he didn’t.  He would split starts with QB Kelly Holcomb, who wasn’t much better.  This is a position in disarray and with a bad offensive line, the situation could get worse.

It’s too bad about the QB deficiency because the Bills have a young talented WR in Lee Evans, who managed to catch seven touchdowns.  With Eric Moulds gone to the Houston Texans, Evans could be the number one WR on the Bills depth chart.  Unless, of course, returning WR Peerless Price regains his former glory as a Bill.  However, Price is past his prime and Evans really is just starting to touch on it.  Now, if they only had someone good throwing to them.

Somehow, RB Willis McGahee was able to rush for over 1000 yards, running for 1247 and five scores.  McGahee has obvious ability and really grinded it out with that sad O-line.  He is a premiere running back, but will probably never be elite because of a dearth in the passing game and have I mentioned the O-line stinks?

The defense will be getting vocal leader, LB Takeo Spikes back after he suffered an Achilles heel injury in the third game of last season.  Spikes joins LB London Fletcher to form a formidable duo at the LB spots.  In the secondary, the Bills hope top draft pick, S Donte Whitner, can make them forget about S Lawyer Milloy whom they let go of.  However, he’ll have to make the Bills forget that they passed up on QBs Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler.  As far as the Bills defensive line?  It’s probably as good as their offensive line.

In the end, I think that the Bills just tank.  There’s really nothing to get excited about with this team, other than taking McGahee as a first, maybe second round draft pick in fantasy football leagues.  With the Jets, who are in transition, at least they are admitting that they are in transition and are actually building a team that can contend in a year or so.
