Nintendo Offers Animal Crossing Desktop Clock for Wi-Fi Survey Help

Nintendo is looking to gather data on the types of internet connections people use by asking MyNintendo account members to download a small program that compiles network information off of the users PC and sends it back to Nintendo. In return, the small download becomes an Animal Crossing desktop clock once the information has been sent. The program retrieves and sends the following information:
- Your Modem and Router manufacturer and type
- The type of internet connection you have (DSL or Cable)
- How your PC connects to your router (if applicable)
- The model number of your router
- Time you start the connection
- Your IP Address
- Cookie information
- Total connecting time
- UPnP Information (Model name)
- UPnP Information (Model number)
- Connection origin code
- Destination server host name
- Destination server global IP Address
- Sending data CRC
If you’re a big Nintendo fan, this might be right up your alley, as the information will help Nintendo plan a good Wi-Fi service. However, as is the case with anything that gathers information and sends it to companies, download at your own risk.

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but Doom, the original cult classic FPS has been ported to the iPodLinux platform. I can’t imagine how they get the UI to work with the click wheel, and there are a lot of reports of frame-rate issues, but this is just nifty. Frustrating UI aside, it really is impressive how many platforms Doom has been ported to - I have it on my smartphone right now and can only imagine what portable devices of tomorrow will be able to run it.

With Microsoft touting the Xbox 360 as a multimedia hub, it’s good to see them following through with their promise to integrate 3rd party video players like the Sony PSP into the Xbox 360 dashboard. Some leaked screenshots show UI for playing content stored on a PSP via the Xbox 360. Although the developer kit used to make these screenshots is presumably using the PSP as a mass storage device, the Xbox 360 would theoretically also be able to transcode media center content into a format supported by the PSP enabling you to take your shows and movies on the road with you.

Heretic Homebrew for the DS

The Nintendo DS homebrew market is starting to heat up and some brilliant hackers over at Drunken Coders have managed to port Raven’s 1994 classic FPS Heretic to the DS - they even manage to take advantage of the second screen to display in game maps. I’m not sure how many of you guys have played Heretic but it was easily one of the better games of it’s era - it had great graphics, fun gameplay, and (for the time) a very involving story-line. I know the Nintendo DS lacks some of the “cool factor” that the PSP has, but as more and more cool retro homebrew projects pop up I get more and more tempted to get one - I could spend hours going through Heretic again!

Google Maps Powers Nintendo DS GPS Hack

A devoted Nintendo DS hacker, Alexei Karpenko, has managed to rig up a Lassen iQ module to the handheld system, transforming the top screen into a GPS system. Downloading information from Google Maps, the FrankenDS also requires use of the Game Boy Movie Player and a Compact Flash card to hold the necessary data. While portability issues may keep my colleague Edwin from using this in court anytime soon, the GPS interface is just one of Karpenko’s innovative uses for his homemade DS serial connector, the PassMe.

Stateside PSP Firmware 2.0 Upgrade Coming August 12th

Sony has announced that the United States-specific upgrade to the PSP Firmware will become available August 12th. The upgrade can either be directly installed using the PSP Network Update feature (which requires a 802.11b hotspot connection) or downloaded from http://us.playstation.com/psp and installed via USB. Everything that was part of the Japanese release will be included in the American version, from the minor tweaks to the major features such as the web browser and photo sharing program. Additionally, those early-adopters who couldn’t wait and have already installed the Japanese version can install the American version directly over the top of their previous upgrade, thus un-voiding the warranty on their PSP, which isn’t technically allowed to run “unauthorized software.”

Nintendo Wi-Fi Theatrical Trailer Debuts

Nintendo has chosen to begin the mainstream hype of its upcoming Wi-Fi service with a 1 minute trailer that will be run before copies of The Fantastic Four, The Dukes of Hazzard, Bad News Bears, Stealth, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Island. The trailer, titled “The Sad, Agonizing Tale of Bhunvan Ganguly,” will run between July 29th and August 25th. Rather than a detail-laden explosion, Nintendo has decided to employ some cinematic subtlety to generate interest. However, the ad does feature footage of the online Mario Kart DS and stresses world-wide connectivity. Be sure to catch the trailer on the big screen, or at online at the link below.

Many have heard of the awesome new PSP 2.0 firmware upgrade, and are wanting to make the jump. In the US, you have to go through a couple of extra hoops if you want to accomplish this task. Fear not, thanks to this nice step-by-step tutorial. A word of caution: this update is not intended for US PSPs and thusly will not be supported by Sony. Also, if you do decide to do the update, you cannot downgrade to the current firmware release. This means no more emulators, but cool new features such as web browsing. Check it out and let us know how it went.

Gamespot: 50 Cent Interview

Gamespot has an interview with 50 Cent where he talks about his upcoming video game, Bulletproof. They also show a bit of the game along with some behind the scenes content. The game is looking very interesting, but I’ll hold my opinions off until we see a demo or the actual finalized game. If you want to be a true gangsta, be sure to have this game pre-ordered.
