iPose: iPod Modeling Contest for Tsunami Relief

The Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity and Alpha Pi sorority at the University of Arizona are hosting the iPose Competition. Basically, you have members of ten different fraternities and sororities posing with iPod shuffles. Visitors can vote for who they think has the best pose, and the winners will walk away with iPod related prizes. The best part, though, is that for every vote cast 10 cents will be donated to tsunami relief efforts. The winners will be announced live at ASUA’s Spring Fling carnival on Friday, April 8th.

Melodious Walkabout Auditory Navigation System

If you have ever been lost in a huge place, the Melodious Walkabout might be just the thing for you. Using the device, you simply listen to a few songs and are directed to your destination through audio cues without the need to have to ask for directions.
It provides a mobile user with awareness where the destination is located by contextualizing audio contents the user is listening to. The mobile user wears headphones and hears audio contents that reach him from a certain direction. The direction of the virtual sound source unobtrusively tells him in which direction to go.
So you just continue to walk in the general direction of where the music is coming from, and once it you are surrounded by it, you have arrived. The Melodious Walkabout consists of a Bluetooth GPS-receiver, a Geographical Information System that calculates the direction and distance to the destination, and an auditory display that renders personal audio contents in real-time according to the GIS.

Imagine you’re stumbling back to your apartment late one night, and you stop in an alley to relieve yourself. Suddenly, a bright flash goes off and a loud voice yells at you saying “Leave the area now” and alerts you that your photograph is being taken. The FlashCAM-530 will do just that. It’s there to catch prostitutes, cohorts, vandals and such. The Guardian has an article which questions how the FlashCam distinguishes between these types and innocent folk like you. The FlashCAM-530 senses motion up to 100 feet away. When it detects motion it begins snapping 35mm photographs, flashes light, and yells at you. It was developed over several years with the help of Law Enforcement and anti-graffiti professionals. Anti-graffiti professionals? How do you get that job?

It really doesn’t get much more upscale than this. In what has to be the ultimate mod, a gentleman by the name of “Limo Bob” took a Boeing jet and turned it into a super-stretch limousine. The vehicle no longer has wings or a tail, but you can definitely tell that this was an aircraft at one point in its history. Hilton Hotels Provide Alarm Clocks With MP3 Plug-In

The Hilton family of hotels will be introducing a new alarm clock this Spring. The clocks will have an MP3 jack, which will allow you to plug in your digital music player to listen to your tracks on the radio. The clock also features four preset music buttons, if you are feeling a bit more random. In conjunction with the launch of the new alarm clocks, the Hilton is also having a nice sized giveaway as well. You can enter at their site, or download their Virtual Alarm Clock, which will tell you when to check back to enter in all four contest phases. They are pushing this one with the iPod twist, and as such, they are giving away a total of 251 iPod mini’s along with a bunch of iTunes music.

PearPC Taking Donations to Sue CherryOS

So this program called PearPC allows you to run Mac OS X on your Windows-based computer (or Microsoft Xbox). People complained of the agonizing slowness of the platform, and CherryOS announced that they planned on doing it the right way. Well, CherryOS came out, and it was also slow. Upon further inspection, it turns out that CherryOS basically stole a bunch of code straight out of PearPC to build their own software. We should have known something was up when they also named their product after a fruit. Nonetheless, PearPC is now asking for monetary help in suing the CherryOS people. If you care, go ahead and show a little support.

Thanks to a Toshiba Corporation announcement today, it seems that we are near the point where we can say goodbye to the wait time for recharging lithium-ion batteries. Toshiba’s new battery can recharge 80% of the battery’s capacity in one minute, 60 times faster than a conventional lithium-ion battery. According to the announcement, we have new nano-material technology to thank for this much much needed improvement. Now if someone can only make the batteries last longer, we’ll all be in digital heaven that much more quickly.
