2012 Holiday Gift Guide: Apple TV

Apple TV

iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch will be big holiday gifts this year, make no mistake about it. The Apple TV is actually a fantastic complement to Apple's handhelds, worthy of being featured in our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide. A nice little device in its own right, the Apple TV gives you access to Apple's iTunes Store entertainment content right on your television. In addition, you get Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, sports networks, and plenty of other entertainment options. Connect it to your iTunes Home Share, and you can use your iOS devices as remote controls for the Apple TV. The best part, though, is AirPlay. You can beam audio and video content right to the Apple TV with ease from your iOS device, or your Mac. You can also mirror the display of these devices as well, all wireless over your home network.

You can pick up the Apple TV for $99, or $94.95 on Amazon.

Honorable Mention: Roku 2 XS Streaming Player

Gmail app 2.0 iOS (2)Gmail app 2.0 iOS

Google has finally released version 2.0 of its native Gmail client app for iOS. It has much requested features and a complete resign that is cleaner than before. TechCrunch columnist MG Siegler says the app had no influence from the Sparrow acquisition, which is surprising since version 2.0's UI looks decent. Here is a list of the updated features.

  • Multiple account support
  • App redesigned with a new, cleaner look
  • Search predictions as you type

Hopefully the team turns its attention to the YouTube app for iOS which is sorely needing a clean revamp that also supports iPhone 5 and the iPad. Fingers crossed.

Psy’s “Gangnam Style” Becomes Most-Watched Video on YouTube

Move over, Justin Bieber - there's a new internet sensation in town.

Korean singer/rapper Psy's popular music video for his song "Gangnam Style" just reached close to 818 million views, surpassing Bieber's for his song "Baby," which previously held the title for the most watched YouTube video (his count is currently around 804 million). The "Gangnam Style" music video (shown above) sees Psy singing his song in a combination of typical music video locations (near the pool, around some dancing, scantily-clad women) to some funny situations (a closing elevator, a bathroom stall).

Since Psy's video became an internet hit, he has performed on Saturday Night Live and with Madonna and MC Hammer.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Review

Kindle Paperwhite Review

Amazon introduced the Kindle Paperwhite alongside the rest of the completely refreshed Kindle family at a special event on September 6, and some would argue that, despite three new Kindle Fire tablets being introduced, the star of the show was the Kindle Paperwhite. The Paperwhite takes the place as the top E Ink Kindle model. Avid readers still have an affinity towards E Ink displays, as they're much easier on the eyes than backlit tablets and smartphones. The problem with them is that they generally are unusable in the dark. Barnes & Noble solved that with its Nook Simple Reader with GloLight, and now Amazon has its own solution with the Kindle Paperwhite, which features a front-lit, touch-sensitive, E Ink display. Does it live up to the hype? Follow along in our unique take on a Kindle Paperwhite review to find out.

Smartphone stolen subway

Theft of smartphones are on the rise, especially iPhones, and this latest crime was all caught on video. The YouTube video catches a dude eyeing a woman's smartphone. Then, as the train makes its stop, the thief waits a few seconds and, just as the train is about to leave, takes off with the victim's mobile device, leaving her high and dry as the train door rapidly closes. Even before the video went viral, the Hungary police identified the 28 year old thief and was arrested at his girlfriends apartment; and get this, it's not his first time. As a public reminder, we at Gear Live want to remind our readers to be hyper-aware of their surroundings. Shake up travel habits and practice the "out of sight, out of mind" method. Keep those expensive gadgets hidden. Oh, and those white cabled Apple headphones are a dead giveaway.

Denzel Washington and Aaron Paul Draw Acting Inspiration from YouTube

Denzel Washington in 'Flight'Who needs method acting when you have YouTube?

Denzel Washington and Aaron Paul both recently admitted to learning how to play alcoholics for their latest films - Flight and Smashed, respectively - from watching drunks on YouTube.

"You can YouTube 'drunks.' There are thousands. They are amazing," Washington, 57, said. His favorite video is of "this one guy that's trying to open a door and it takes about a half hour."

Paul also heralded the video site for its collection of inebriated individuals' humorous actions caught on tape: "I watched so many funny videos. There are so many. Just type in 'drunk people' or 'people drunk,' and you'll find some gems. There are amazing videos on YouTube that only have like 400 views. I'm just shocked that the entire planet hasn't seen them yet."
