Hulk Hogan Scheduled to Host ‘American Gladiators’
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Reality, Sports, NBC,
As I reported several weeks ago, NBC will be introducing an updated version of American Gladiators. At the time, I said the classic series reminded me of Iron Chef+Battle of the Network Stars+WWE. Well, apparently wrestling wasn’t such an original analogy; word has it a former wrestler will now be hosting it.
According to TV Week, Hulk Hogan has been tapped for the emcee duties. The
WWE celebrity and Hogan Knows Best star is reportedly committed to the project and is currently finalizing the deal. As for the Gladiators who will terrorize the naive competitors, those roles are still being cast.
Be looking for the reality competition sometime mid-season.

When Reality Stars Procreate
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, America’s Next Top Model, Survivor, Gossip, Rumors,
OK, this one just baffles me. Survivor: Pearl Island contestant Jonny Fairplay and girlfriend Michelle Deighton of America’s Next Top Model are expecting. A baby. Together. That is not to say that normal folk can’t have a love child with a model—I’m just baffled that anyone would find Fairplay attractive enough to want to have his baby. This is the guy who lied about his grandma dying while he was a contestant on Survivor just to get further in the game. A real stand up guy, right? The two have apparently been dating for two years while Fairplay (aka Jon Dalton) continues to s-t-r-e-t-c-h his 15 minutes of fame by wrestling (huh? you read that right) and appearing on CMT’s Ty Murray’s Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge. Deighton didn’t make it very far in the fourth season of Top Model, where she contracted some kind of skin disease which sent the models into a tizzy because they had shared makeup with Deighton (it ended up being impetigo). She too has appeared on WWE Friday Night Smackdown. According to TMZ.com, Deighton is 17 weeks pregnant.

The Return of ‘American Gladiators’
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Action, Prime Time, Reality, Sports, Cable, NBC, Renewals,
The sick voyeur in me has always loved seeing Average Joes fight for their lives—which probably explains why Schwarzenegger’s The Running Man still remains a guilty pleasure for me to this day. This fascination also fueled my enthusiasm for the horribly addictive show from the 90’s known as American Gladiators.
The series pitted male and female contestants against the Gladiators who reigned over their arena. The poor souls would do their best to score points by navigating various obstacle courses. They would also try and avoid being taken down along the way. I would compare the show to Iron Chef+Battle of the Network Stars+WWE.
Gladiators, which ended its run in 1996, is now being resurrected by NBC as a mid-season addition. Unfortunately, the show will be subject to an ‘updating’....which could mean just about anything. (Having tried to watch Battle of the Network Reality Stars, I’m hesitant about anything that’s tweaked).
Here’s to hoping that some of my favorite challenges like The Assault and Breakthrough & Conquer will return. If not, I may have to turn to the re-runs currently airing on ESPN Classic.
What were your favorite challenges? How about your favorite Gladiators? Let us know!

Investigating Chris Benoit Tragedy
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Talent, Gossip, Internet, News,
Authorities are still trying to piece together the events that led to Chris Benoit’s murderous rage and subsequent suicide, while World Wrestling Entertainment does their best to downplay his alleged steroid usage. DEA officials raided Benoit’s physician’s offices Wednesday, confiscating medical records. WWE owner Vince McMahon denies steroid usage among his former wrestler, saying that Benoit was tested in April and the results came back “totally negative.” Benoit strangled his 43-year-old wife in their Atlanta home Friday night, then smothered their son the next day. Benoit placed Bibles next to both bodies and sent text messages to friends on Sunday morning before hanging himself with his gym equipment. The case seemed pretty cut and dry…but there is one strange piece of evidence still left on the table. Benoit’s Wikipedia entry was updated with news of his wife’s death – more than 12 hours before police discovered the bodies. The entry has been tracked all the way to Stamford, Connecticut, the home base of the WWE, but it is unknown if the person who edited the entry is actually connected with World Wrestling Entertainment…or even in Connecticut. Chris Benoit’s text messages were sent hour after the Wikipedia page was already updated.

Trump Keeps His Hair After Wrestling Bet
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Specials, Sports, Cable, NBC, On Demand/PPV, Apprentice, The - Donald, Cable/Satellite,
Did you think this could go down any other way than Trump walking away with a full head of hair? If you weren’t aware of the “Battle of the Billionaires” that went down between Donald Trump and World Wrestling Entertainment owner Vince McMahon, the two had a wrestling match where the winner would keep their hair intact. Sounds kind of interesting, although neither got in the ring and did the actual fighting—they had representatives handle the “wrestling” for them. In the end, the winner was Trump, who got to shave McMahon’s head. The little stunt didn’t do too shabby either—the pay-per-view event drew mega viewership. The billionaires did manage to get in on the action a little, with Trump taking a few jabs at McMahon and Trump recieving a Stone Cold Stunner from “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. We have to wonder if bald Trump would be better than comb-over Trump though.

Donald Trump Bets His Famous Comb-Over
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Sports, Cable, Apprentice, The - Donald, Cable/Satellite, Gossip,
Donald Trump has bet his famous hairdo for a wrestling event. He and World Wrestling Entertainment chairman Vince McMahon both bet their hair for the WrestleMania 23 event on April 1st. A recent taping of Raw, to air on February 15th on the USA Network, shows Trump challenging McMahon to a match. The challenge was brought on after McMahon wanted Trump in his “dubious Mr. McMahon Kiss My Ass Club,” as well as the accusation that Trump stole “You’re Fired!” from McMahon. Trump had some fightin’ words for McMahon, which will air on the February 15th show, saying, “I am here to challenge you to a match at WrestleMania. And I am going to kick your ass!” Of course, these guys can’t actually get into a ring (although that might be interesting), so each will have a representative wrestle for them. Trump’s ultimate challenge? “If my guy loses, you can shave my head. But if your guy loses, I’m going to shave your head!”

Unpacking WrestleMania: The Complete Anthology
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Sports, DVD, Features,
Our friends over at World Wrestling Entertainment just sent us the new WrestleMania: The Complete Anthology box set, which will be on store shelves tomorrow. Before hitting you with a full review, we figured we would drop a bunch of images on you so that you can get a look at the work put in to the presentation of the set. For a wrestling fan, it’s easy to see that the WWE chose the artwork carefully. One bummer is that all discs are dual-sided - this means no art on any of the discs themselves. Luckily, the WWE more than made up for that with the inserts and graphical interpretations of some of the more memorable WrestleMania moments from the past 21 years. Check out a host of images after the jump.
