Samsung has become grammatically correct while announcing their new netbook
Mini-notebook. The 12.1-inch NC20 is a larger version of their NC10 and will have a Via 1.3GHz Nano processor inside. It also features a 1280x800 resolution, Chrome9 graphics, Windows XP Home Edition, 1 GB DDR2 memory and 160GB HDD storage. The N20 utilizes 6 Li-ion batteries for 6.5 hours of life, is Bluetooth capable and has 3 USB ports, an Ethernet LAN and a 3-in-1 card reader. No price or availability date has been announced.

Cuba Launches Linux Nova

Cuba launched Linux Nova last week at a Havana computer conference on “technological sovereignty.” The government feels that Microsoft systems are a potential threat to their country because they say U.S. security agents have access to codes. Besides that, they say that the trade embargo makes it difficult to get the software legally and update it. Dean of the School of Free Software, Hector Rodriguez, claims that about 20% of the computers are currently using Linux but feels that that figure could climb to more than 50% in 5 years.

Woman Sues Microsoft For Windows Downgrade Charge

Emma Alvarado, from Los Angeles, Ca., was so teed off at Microsoft that she filed a class action lawsuit to recover the $59.25 fee that they charged her for downgrading her Windows Vista to XP. The suit says that the company charge is in violation of Washington State’s Unfair Business Practices Act and Consumer Protection Act. Emma is hoping that others who have payed the fee will join in. Microsoft is also involved in another suit that says that the sticker “Windows Vista Capable” is misleading.

VoIP Star Trek Communicator Phone

Sci-fi fans who Skype/VoIP will love this new USB speakerphone that resembles a Star Trek communicator. Compatible with Windows XP/Vista and Tiger, it has a volume control and mute function with indicator and a separate USB sound controller with speakerphone and microphone. The phone also makes various comments such as “Transporter room, ready to beam up.” Aye, aye, Cap’n. We understand that the communicator will be at Dream Cheeky but has not materialized there as yet.

Windows 7 direct download links

As we told you the other day, the Windows 7 beta went live today. However, apparently there was a bit more demand than Microsoft had planned for. Thanks to NeoWin, we’ve got the direct download links for both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7:
Be sure to check out the post on NeoWin for specifics on what to do with those files once you download, and also know that you will still need a key from Microsoft to use this through the August 1, 2009 expiration date, otherwise it will stop working after 30 days, cool?
Windows 7 beta goes public January 9th

During the kickoff Microsoft keynote that marks the start CES, Steve Ballmer announced that Windows 7 beta is available starting today for TechNet and MSDN subscribers. Nothing too exciting there for the average Joe, we know, which is why we were excited when he also mentioned that the beta would also be publicly available beginning this Friday, January 9th. You’ll be able to grab either the 32-bit version, or the 64-bit version of the Windows 7 beta software if you are one of the first 2.5 million people to hit the download button. You just need to head to the Windows 7 product page to do so. Just be aware that the beta software will expire on August 1, 2009.
As part of the release, Microsoft was also happy to note that Windows Live Essentials, “a free suite of communications and sharing applications that make it easy for people to communicate, share and keep their online lives in sync and in one place with one login,” is now also available on a worldwide scale.
Charges Rise on Dell MS XP Downgrade

Last June, Dell began to charge customers $20.00 to $50.00 to downgrade to Windows XP. It was up to $100.00 by October. Now it seems that they are charging $150.00. At the same time, we recently read that Microsoft claims that 9 out of 10 Vista customers are satisfied. While we don’t believe everything we read, we keep wondering why Dell is punishing XP users and MS’s inhouse research, with figures that include licenses sold as part of a downgrade package, seems cheerfully optimistic. What do you guys think? Remember when Coke came up with a new version and nobody liked it? It just went away.

Microsoft To Drop OneCare, Adopt Free Morro

Microsoft has announced that they will be offering free antivirus software late next year for Windows XP/Vista/7 and the upcoming IE 8. Referred to as Morro, the software will provide “comprehensive protection from malware including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans.” Because it is smaller, it is a welcome relief for those of us with aging PCs. Although they are discontinuing their OneCare subscription service in June, users should be happy they are saving a few bucks.

800MHz P565 Handset Coming Soon From ASUS

ASUS announced that they would soon be releasing a smartphone with a touch interface and a whopping 800MHz of processing goodness. ASUS is featuring a new touch interface they have named “Glide,” which overlays the Windows Mobile operating system. The P565 features not only speed, but a 2.8-inch VGA touch screen with a resolution of 480 x 640. The face is what you would expect for a touchscreen device, but what you cannot see is the leather that lines the back of the device, clearly aiming it for a business environment. The P565 incorporates Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, GPS, 256MB of flash, with 128MB DDR SDRAM, an SD slot, Blutooth, a 3 megapixel camera, and supports HSDPA 3.6Mbps, UMTS 2100, EDGE/GPRS/GSM 900/1800/1900, Class 10. No word yet on price or when it will launch, but it certainly should be a very capable device once it comes to market.

Microsoft’s Windows Celebrates 25 Years

It was 25 years ago today that Bill Gates unveiled Microsoft Windows; of course, it wouldn’t be released in stores for nearly two more years, but it was undeniably the start of a revolution.
There are those who love to hate the software giant, but the Seattle-area economy has nothing to offer but gratitude – in King County, which includes Seattle and Microsoft hometown, Redmond, there are some 70,000 households with a net-worth of at least $1 million. My dentist once told me that his two brothers, who went to Microsoft while he went to dental school, both retired at the age of 36; he is well past 36 and definitely not retired. Some people have all the luck…
In honor of Windows’ anniversary, we’ve posted a video (up top) of current Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer doing his best cheesy car salesman impersonation in this ridiculous Windows commercial from the 80’s; proving that dignity is not always a prerequisite for success.
