Sprint to offer iPhone 5 with unlimited data

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
This morning Bloomberg is reporting that Sprint is all set to sell the iPhone 5 when it debuts in the next few weeks, and that they'll differentiate their offering with an unlimited data plan. Both AT&T and Verizon offerred unlimited data plans on the iPhone, but have since moved to tiered plans. New customers on both networks get a 2 GB limit on data each month, and pay overage fees for using more than that. This would give Sprint, the #3 wireless carrier in the US, an interesting advantage over its larger competitors. Offering the iPhone 5 with their popular unlimited voice and data plan, which costs less than the tiered plans offered elsewhere, could see the company gain quite a few customers who'd rather not worry about their data usage costing them extra money.

Motorola's long-awaited Droid Bionic smartphone is finally here.
The device, Verizon's first dual-core, LTE phone, is available now at Verizon stores and online at verizonwireless.com. It doesn't come cheap, though: the Bionic will set you back $299.99 with a two-year contract.
For a limited time, those who purchase the Lapdock accessory, which essentially turns your smartphone into a 11.6-inch laptop, will get a $100 mail-in rebate when subscribing to the $50, 5GB data plan or higher. That Lapdock, however, is also $300.

Those waiting on the next big Android Nexus device won't have to wait that much longer, as we've just learned that the Nexus Prime--which will be the first phone to rock Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich--will be launching in October exclusively on Verizon Wireless. Of course, we expect the iPhone 5 to also launch in October on AT&T, Verizon, and possible Sprint and T-Mobile as well. Verizon wants to be the only carrier selling both the next-gen iPhone and the next-gen Android smartphone at the same time.

iPhone 5 coming to Sprint in October according to WSJ

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sprint will be selling the iPhone 5 (alongside AT&T and Verizon) when it launches in "mid-October." In addition, they'll also sell the updated iPhone 4 model that Apple will be selling at a lower price (likely an 8 GB model.) This is great for Sprint and great for Apple, because if the report holds true, it'll give Sprint a much-needed shot in the arm to sell both the new iPhone model as well as the lower-cost iPhone 4. As for Apple, it gives them play on yet another American carrier, which means more marketshare. We'll be keeping our ears on this one, and will let you know what more we hear on this.

Verizon CFO is “disappointed” that iPhone 5 is not available yet

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds,
With so many iPhone 5 rumors floating around, it's refreshing to hear one from an honest-to-goodness Apple partner speaking on the record. So mark it down in your rumor book that Verizon thought the next-generation Apple smartphone would be released in June but is now expecting it to arrive this fall.
"Obviously we're disappointed that the iPhone 5 didn't come out in June … we continue to prepare for it and when that comes we'll be ready," Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said this week on a webcast spotted by Channel Partners Online Thursday.
Speaking at the Oppenheimer Technology & Communications Conference, Shammo said it's likely that the much-anticipated iPhone will finally make its debut in the fall, which is in line with persistent rumors of a September or October release date—though; the Verizon exec "isn't ready to stake his life on it," according ot Channel Partners Online.

Verizon claims northeast outage was due to sabotage

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Corporate News, Wireless / WiFi,
The second day of the strike by 45,000 Verizon union employees turned ugly, with Verizon claiming 12 acts of sabotage against its communications facilities.
Union workers, meanwhile, said Verizon non-union employees had struck union workers with their vehicles, according to the Web site of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, one of the unions involved in the strike.
About 45,000 employees, members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) could not find common ground in negotiations, and the union leaders called a strike, which began Sunday at 6 AM, according to NJ.com.

BlackBerry Bold 9930 hitting Verizon August 11?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
We just got a tip that is telling us to expect Verizon Wireless to release the upcoming touchscreen BlackBerry Bold 9930 on August 11, just ten days from now. A few days ago, Verizon accidentally posted a video of the 9930 on its Web site when it meant to post a video of the BlackBerry Bold 9650 instead. We've been expecting an imminent release of the 9930, so we could definitely see this rumor panning out. Of course, we don't know until things are officially official.
Unboxing Live 072: Verizon 4G LTE MiFi Mobile Hotspot

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Accessories, Cell Phones, Features, Videocasts,
We open up the Verizon 4G LTE MiFi hotspot in this episode of Unboxing Live. The MiFI is a portable Wi-Fi hotspot that connects to Verizon's vast 4G LTE network at speeds that meet, or in some cases, exceed, the typical home broadband speeds that we are all used to. You can connect up to five devices to the network that the MiFi creates, allowing you fast Internet access on the go, anywhere within Verizon's 4G footprint. Leave a 4G area, and the MiFi will drop down to 3G speeds, which is a nice backup, and not something that all current 4G hotspots offer. It also has a low power e-ink display to show the status of the connection and battery life, something Samsung's SCH-LC11 4G hotspot surprisingly left out.

Samsung Galaxy S II Function on Verizon will support 4G LTE

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Broadband, Smartphones, Handhelds,
We know that many of you are waiting on the Samsung Function, Verizon's version of the Galaxy S II, to hit stores. While we still don't have a solid release date, what we do have at least is information directly from Verizon (by way of Twitter) confirming that the Function will support their 4G LTE network. Kinda makes the wait a little more unbearable, right?
Edit: Whoops. Looks like someone at VZW jumped the gun, because now they are taking it back and saying that they were referring to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 instead.
