Amazon Kindle Fire HD: 7- and 8.9-inch tablets starting at $199

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Corporate News, Handhelds,
Alongside the Kindle Paperwhite, the other big news from this morning's Amazon Kindle event was the new Kindle Fire HD. The Fire HD will be available in two sizes--a 7-inch model, and an 8.9-inch version.
The larger version sports a 1920 x 1200 254 ppi display that has a polarizing filter (and laminated touch sensor) to reduce glare. On the inside, the Kindle Fire 8.9 is powered by a TI OMAP 4470 CPU and 1GB RAM. It's got dual stereo speakers (very nice for a tablet,) a high definition front-facing camera (with Skype support,) and even HDMI out. Additionally, it has MIMO dual-band Wi-Fi support, making its wireless connection up to 41% faster than that of the new iPad. Amazon is selling these for just $299 for the 16GB model, a full $100 less than we expected, and they'll ship on November 20th. The 32GB model sells for $369. Those who need mobile data connectivity aren't left out in the cold, as there's also a Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE.

The 2012 Kindle Fire sees a bunch of hardware improvements that will bring about better performance than last year's model. It packs in a faster CPU, 1GB RAM, a new front-facing camera, and a longer-lasting battery. Despite all the improvements, the new Kindle Fire SD sees a steep price drop, going from $199 down to $159. Is this the new Kindle Fire?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Handhelds, Rumors,
Earlier today we mentioned that Amazon is touting that its Kindle Fire tablet has sold out (which really means they stopped making them because they're now manufacturing a new model.) Well, with the introduction of new Kindle hardware scheduled for next week, The Verge has published an image that purports to be the next Kindle Fire. Since posting, a source chimed in and let them know that this isn't exactly right, as the new Kindle Fire has a wider bezel than the image shows, and bezeled sides. We'll know for sure on September 6 when Amazon takes the stage.

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Corporate News, Handhelds, Rumors,
If you were hoping to pick up a brand new Kindle Fire tablet from Amazon today, you're out of luck. The company has announced that the Kindle Fire has officially sold out. Of course, that's corporate speak for "We'll be announcing a brand new Kindle Fire at our event next week and don't want anyone buying the older model and experience buyers remorse." The Kindle Fire is the latest Kindle model to be pulled as Amazon's Kindle event draws near. The new Kindle Fire is rumored to have a 1280 x 800 display.
Next-generation iPhone to be announced September 12, iPad mini in October?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Handhelds, Rumors,
For the past few weeks, we figured that Apple would be unveiling both its next-generation iPhone 5 as well as a 7.85-inch iPad at the same event on September 12. We thought it made sense that the company would introduce its new iOS devices all at once, but Daring Fireball's John Gruber theorized that a simultaneous unveiling might not be in the cards because then the two devices would steal each other's thunder, so to speak.

How the iPad mini will look next to the iPad and iPhone 4S

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Design, Handhelds, Rumors,
Earlier today we gave you a look at what the 7.85-inch iPad should look like based on leaked schematics. That said, sometimes you need context to get a true feel for these things, and 9to5Mac put together another image that shows how the iPad mini mockup stacks up against the third-generation iPad and the current iPhone 4S. As you can see, it's enough of a difference to make it a standalone produce, resting between the iPhone display size and the larger iPad. Anyone else excited about this one yet? We're expecting to hear more about the iPad mini during Apple's September 12 iPhone event.

Based on recent reports on the design of the upcoming 7.85-inch iPad mini, take a look at the new renders of the device. As you can see, the iPad sports a thinner bezel on the sides of the display which makes it look more similar to an iPhone or iPod touch than it does its larger iPad brethren.
Designer Maurizio Vitale put the image together using purportedly leaked schematics.

Microsoft Surface for Windows RT to launch Oct. 26 for just $199?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Handhelds, Microsoft, Rumors,
When Microsoft revealed Surface to the world, we were pretty impressed. It looked like a highly-capable platform that, if it lived up to its promises, would be a major player in the tablet space. However, we also know that the iPad rules the roost. In fact, most consumers don't want tablets so much as they want iPads. What would Microsoft do with Surface to gain attention as a solid differentiator? It looks like it's gonna compete on price.

Apple now selling refurbished iPad (2012) for $50 discount

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Handhelds, Hot Deals,
It sure took a while, but Apple is finally selling refurbished models of the new iPad (2012) for a pretty nice discount. All models sell for $50 less than the standard MRSP for a brand new model, so if you're okay with refurbished goods, it's a nice deal. You even get the one-year of AppleCare included, just in case anything goes wrong. Anyone gonna pick one up?
Be sure to read our iPad (2012) review if you're on the fence.
