Windows XP SP3 to be released on April 29th
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Corporate News, Internet, Microsoft, Software,
Man, April is just shaping up to bring us all sorts of goodness - Mario Kart Wii, Grand Theft Auto IV, and now Windows XP SP3. Don’t get me wrong, I sure as hell am not saying that XP SP3 will be anywhere near as enjoyable as two of the biggest console game releases of the year, but seriously, if those rumors about a 10 percent speed increase hold true, that is just one more reason to stick with XP over Vista. Look for WIndows XP SP3 in the Microsoft Download Center, as well as Microsoft Update, on April 29th.

Hubble Tracks Black Holes on the Internet
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Science, Software,
According to Ethan Katz-Bassett, a University of Washington grad student, there are black holes on the Internet. Funded by the National Science Foundations, he and his advisor Arvind Krishnamurthy designed a program to find them. They make sure that the problem is not just a temporary glitch on a site and mark them on a global map. The pair is hoping that service providers will use Hubble, named after the Space telescope that charts black holes, to track down their own issues. The findings will be presented at the Usenix Symposium being held next week in San Francisco.

Twinkle, the iPhone Twitter client
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Features, Handhelds, Internet, Software,
If you own an iPhone and use Twitter, you are gonna wanna keep an eye on Twinkle. The app was just released this morning, and it is already my favorite iPhone Twitter client. Better than the mobile version of Twitter, better than Hahlo, and better than MobileTwitter. It supports photos with your Tweets, taken right from the iPhone camera, as well as geolocation. There is even a “Near Me” section that will show you other Twitter users in your area.
In order to install Twinkle, you’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone, and then add “http://www.polarbearfarm.com/repo/” to your Installer.app sources list. We’ve compiled a few screenshots of Twinkle, which you can find in our Twinkle gallery.

You can even choose a photo to be shown onscreen, and special effects that reflect your actions. Not exactly Fight Club, but if it prevents your aggression from landing you in jail, we’re all about it. Visit the website to watch a rather interesting demo. Available soon.

As part of yesterday’s Tuesday update, Apple finally released the much-delayed Final Cut Server. Originally announced at NAB 2007, many expected it to be available sometime in mid-2007. Now, just about a year later, the product is finally ready for consumption. According to Apple, Final Cut Server is “a scaleable server application…allows searching across multiple disks and SAN volumes and enables viewing, annotation and approval of content from anywhere using a PC or Mac.”
As for pricing, you can expect to pay $999 USD for a one-server license with 10-concurrent client licenses. If that’s not enough for you, you can get a copy with unlimited client licenses for $1999. You can pick up Final Cut Server now from the Apple Store, or any authorized Apple reseller.

What a fun app! The Tiny USB Office, which recently replaced Floppy Office, can allow you to carry your workload with you. With one click it has database creation, data encryption, file sharing, transfer and compression, and e-mail capability. Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Microsoft, PC / Laptop, Software,
Word on the street is that Microsoft plans on finally releasing the first service pack for Windows Vista - that’s right, the long-awaited Windows Vista SP1 will be yours for the downloading in 24 hours. You’ll have to download it manually.
In a month’s time, on April 18, Vista SP1 will be added to the automatic update system. So the more casual bunch who rely on Windows Update for all their security needs will all come in under a second wave of installations. Here’s hoping for less crashing, better performance, and all that other good stuff. We’ve been waiting for this for over a year.
Speaking of which, those Vista price drops will also be going into effect this week. If you go ahead and install SP1, hit us up and let us know how it went in the comments.

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Misc. Tech, Toys, USB,
After you tire of your USB Missile Launcher, or if you want to one-up friends who have one, we suggest the Webcam Missile Launcher. Hook it up to MSN Instant Messenger via USB and an on-screen menu helps you to rotate, tilt and fire away. With a range of 10 ft., if you get two, you can use the opposition’s to shoot her/him. The 5 x 7 1/2 x 4 1/4-inch mini-weapon has such sound effects as “boing” and “whoosh” and comes with 3 missiles and a 4 ft. USB cable. Newly arrived, you can get one for $59.95.
(Thanks, Jen)

Why is Apple stalling Flash on the iPhone?
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Smartphones, Editorial, Handhelds, Rumors, Software,
A few weeks ago, we reported that sources revealed to us that Flash on the iPhone was coming soon. At the time, we felt very strongly that the reasons we stated were sound and accurate. Then, a few days ago, Steve Jobs stated that Flash wouldn’t be coming to the iPhone because it was “too slow to be useful” and that Flash Lite was “not capable of being used with the web.”
So we started getting comments on our last entry, like this one, saying that we were wrong. The iPhone 1.1.4 release came and went, as did the iPhone SDK announcement. Nothing from Apple regarding Flash, until Jobs said it was a no go. So we went back to our source, who was - and still is - 100% convinced that these are just stall tactics.
