Apple has been busy updating their Dev Center with another iOS 5 beta update, and today developers can go and grab iOS 5 beta 6. If you are already running beta 5, then you can perform an over-the-air (OTA) update directly from your device, with no need to use iTunes. You can now grab iOS 5 beta 6 for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and Apple TV, alongside iTunes 10.5 beta 6 and Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview 6 for both Snow Leopard (4C5163c) and Lion (4D163b.)
Mac OS X 10.7.1 Lion update now available

Apple has just released Mac OS X 10.7.1, the first major update for Lion, the latest incarnation of the Mac operating system. The update fixes a few bugs, improves reliability of Wi-Fi, and resolves an issue with transferring settings to a new Mac. If you are running Lion, go ahead and fire up Software Update to get this...it's only 17 MB in size.
Mac OS X Lion now available on USB thumb drive for $69

Apple is now selling its updated Mac OS X Lion operating system as a $69 thumb drive.
The device is currently shipping within one to three business days.
"OS X Lion is available on a USB thumb drive for installation without the need for a broadband Internet connection," Apple said on its Web site. "Just plug the drive into your USB port and follow the instructions to install."

Android is running on half of the smartphones in the world

Are almost 50 percent of the world's smartphones running Google's Android? According to Monday data from Canalys, Android ended the second quarter with 48 percent of the market, with Asia Pacific leading the charge.
Globally, the smartphone market is up 73 percent from last year, with 107.7 million devices shipped in the last quarter. Of the 56 countries tracked by Canalys, Android topped 35 of them, with 51.9 million shipments overall.
Why the boost? Canalys pointed to strong Android support from major handset makers like Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, ZTE, and Huawei. Android holds 85 percent of the market in South Korea and 71 percent in Taiwan alone.
Apple came in second place with 20.3 million iPhones sold and 19 percent of the market, which was enough to overtake Nokia's Symbian platform and make Apple the world's top smartphone vendor.

In this episode we give you a first look at over the air updates in iOS 5! With the release of iOS 5 beta 4, Apple is now testing OTA updates, allowing users to update their iOS devices without connecting them to iTunes. Instead, the update happens right on the device itself, using Wi-Fi or 3G. We give you a look at how the process works on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 beta 4 on a Wi-Fi network.

One of the major features of iOS 5 is the ability to update your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad over the air. Today with the release of iOS 5 beta 4, Apple has released the first ever OTA update for iOS to developers. We figured we'd grab a screenshot and give you a look at the process. You simply check for updates in the Settings area, and when it finds one, you tell it to download it. The image above shows the download in progress. Once finished, you're asked if you want to install. A few minutes later, you're up and running again.

Apple OS X Lion sells over a million copies on day one

Apple on Thursday announced that the company's customers had downloaded more than a million copies of OS X Lion on Wednesday, the fastest pace in Apple's history.
Wednesday marked the release of Apple's OS X Lion, which Apple released as a digital download - and only a digital download, from its Mac Apps Store - for $29.99.
In snapping up Lion, Apple customers apparently set new records for Apple's eight major operating system. The release also comes amid news that Apple may begin ditching boxed software.
"Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, in a statement. "Lion is a huge step forward, it's not only packed with innovative features but it's incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we've ever made."

iWork Update 6 brings full Lion compatibility to Apple’s productivity apps

So, yeah, OS X Lion launched today, but you need your software to take advantage of all those new features in order to really get the most of the product. Apple know that, and they've released iWork Update 6 today, which brings features like full screen, Resume, Auto Save, and Versions to Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. You can grab it now through Software Update.
