American Idol: Twelve Top Performances?

American Idol's Top 12

It’s been hyped for weeks, anticipated since last year’s Idol was crowned, and advertised until TV watchers can hardly stand the promos. Tuesday night it finally arrived - the performances from ‘s Top 12. Was it worth two hours of programming?

The night kicked off with the big debut of a big new stage, where in an odd setup the band is suspended and the judges are shoved behind some of the crowd. Host Ryan Seacrest showed off the new lights and interiors as fans screamed, then dropped the bomb that this performance night would be melodic with songs from the famed Lennon-McCartney songbook. My breath caught, and immediately I was excited. Surely one of the Idols would be bold, brave, brash…surely, one of them would sing something from the darker, more politically-minded years of the Beatles. Surely, we would hear some hot 70s-era vocals.

iPhone Dev Team jailbreaks and unlocks iPhone 2.0

iPhone 2.0 jailbroken

In an absurd turn of events, the iPhone Dev Team has announced that they’ve completely unlocked the upcoming software that we are all waiting to get access to come this June. Even better, it is a full unlock as opposed to a simple jailbreak. Custom hacked firmware, ready to run and install any application, whether is is unsigned or “Apple Approved.” Better still, the Dev Team believes that this is a hole that is going to have a very difficult time closing. I guess I should have known when my pal Nate True informed me a while back that, until Apple releases new iPhone hardware, the method used for breaking in will continue to work, regardless of any changes made to the software. This is all part of the Pwnage Project.

We love it.

Mario Kart Wii set for North American launch on April 27

Mario Kart Wii

After hitting you with the Japan and European launch dates for , we are happy to bring you the news that the game launches here in North American on April 27th. That’s just a mere six weeks away before we can get our hands on all that racing wheel (Wii-l?) goodness. Just a reminder, Mario Kart Wii ships with the Wii Wheel, which is a plastic steering wheel that the Wii Remote can snap right in to, for a more intuitive driving experience.

“Mario Kart Wii transforms one of our most popular franchises into a race that every member of the family can join,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Driving with the Wii Wheel could not be more natural, and this is one place where speeding is encouraged.”

If you prefer not using the add-on, you will be pleased to know that the game works just fine with the Wii Remote all by its lonesome, as well as with the Nunchuk, Classic Controller, and even the Gamecube controller. Similar to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Nintendo went out of their way to ensure that gamers would be completely comfortable, regardless of their preferred style of play.

Just when we’ve just gotten into Brawl, we are already awaiting our next Wii game purchase. I mean, 16 new courses, 16 classic courses, 10 battle courses, and motorbikes? Who’s with us?

Spears’ Cameo Forces Silverstone to Quit

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, CBS, NBC, Scrubs, Gossip,

Sarah ChalkeYesterday, we told you that Britney Spears would be making an upcoming appearance on How I Met Your Mother.  Unfortunately, her announced entrance was followed by someone else’s exit.

Alicia Silverstone, who was supposed to be involved in a romantic storyline with Ted, has opted out of her guest role.  It seems Alicia didn’t like the idea of Spears’ cameo overshadowing her her spotlight.  (The pop singer was slated to play her receptionist.)

Sarah Chalke - Dr. Elliot Reid from - will now be stepping in to fill the Clueless star’s shoes.  Unfortunately, her schedule will only allow her to be in one episode….not several, as was intended for Silverstone.  This most likely means will not know the identity of the show’s ‘mother’ anytime soon.

Why is Apple stalling Flash on the iPhone?

iPhone flashA few weeks ago, we reported that sources revealed to us that Flash on the iPhone was coming soon. At the time, we felt very strongly that the reasons we stated were sound and accurate. Then, a few days ago, Steve Jobs stated that Flash wouldn’t be coming to the because it was “too slow to be useful” and that Flash Lite was “not capable of being used with the web.”

So we started getting comments on our last entry, like this one, saying that we were wrong. The iPhone 1.1.4 release came and went, as did the announcement. Nothing from Apple regarding Flash, until Jobs said it was a no go. So we went back to our source, who was - and still is - 100% convinced that these are just stall tactics.

Monkey-picked tea

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Beverages, Tea, Far East, Boiling,

Monkey picked teaWe know, it sounds odd. Why would anyone want to drink tea that has bee picked by a monkey? Does it make it taste any better? As the story goes, this is some of the best tea available, but the trees it grows in are too high, and the mountain face where the trees are is too steep. However, the tea is so delicious that the locals had to have it - so they trained monkeys to pick it. Fast-forward to today, and the practice of monkeys picking tea has pretty much died out, except in one small village where the tradition continues to this day.

Each package is about 2 oz, and we hear it is just about the finest loose tea you’ll ever taste. Each bag makes about 28 servings. Go ahead and pick up a bag over at ThinkGeek Caffeine. Find it under the drinks area.

New York Governor Allegedly Involved in Prostitution Ring

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Legal Issues, Breaking News,

Eliot SpitzerUPDATE: Spitzer will not face any criminal charges. There was no evidence that Spitzer had misused public or campaign money to pay for the women.

Thanks to a report in today’s New York Times, New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was forced to speak during a press conference about his supposed ties to a prostitution ring.

With his wife by his side, the former Attorney General addressed the media without referencing the allegations directly.  (According to the story, the governor is under investigation for meeting up with a prostitute in a Washington D.C hotel room.)  In his statement (he did not take any questions), Spitzer said:

“I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family.  That violates my, or any, sense of right and wrong.  I apologize first, and most importantly, to my family.  I apologize to the public whom I promised better.”

(You can listen to the presser here.)

Although Spitzer reportedly told his senior staff members about the investigation, he did not make it clear for the reporters what this means for his current time in office.

Survivor Micronesia: He’s a Ball of Goo!

Survivor Micronesia, Chet

In the fifth week of , the hits just kept on coming.  During last night’s episode we saw hits that affected alliances, strategies, bodies and overall team morale.

Not surprisingly, there was a wide mix of emotions at Airai’s camp after Mikey B’s surprise elimination last week.  Chet – a bit cocky because he had somehow managed to live another day – was now setting his sights on Jason.  Meanwhile, the gymnastics instructor was still reeling from his team’s idiotic decision.  With the beefy writer now gone, Jason was in a tribe he no longer wanted to be a part of.

iPhone SDK released, available for download

iPhone SDK released

has officially announced the , and it is amazing. In fact, the SDK gives third-party developers access to the exact same tools, APIs, and Cocoa Touch framework that Apple has been using to design their own iPhone apps. This includes features like location-aware applications, hardware-accelerated 3D graphics, the 3-axis accelerometer, and complete access to the media features available on the . The SDK is built right in to Xcode, which includes an iPhone emulator, called iPhone Simulator. This let’s you test your applications without having to load them onto an actual iPhone, where you might end up with a bricked device. When you are ready to test on your actual phone, it is simple to send your app over to the iPhone for real-world testing.

Exciting, right? If you want to give it a shot, the SDK toolset is available for all to download - free of charge. You won’t be able to send your apps to your iPhone unless you are selected to participate in the iPhone 2.0 firmware update beta program, but hey, that’s what iPhone Simulator is for.
