Presidential Inauguration to Delay Oscar Noms

Posted by Johnny Mercedes Categories: Awards,

Listen up, you entertainment junkies. Once again, the real world has encroached upon our precious escapist media.
The Hollywood Reporter is (aptly) reporting that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will shirk tradition next year and announce its nominations a full two days later than usual. Since 2004, when the Oscars were moved from March to February, the nominations have been revealed on a Tuesday in the middle of January. However, the planned date conflicts with the upcoming Presidential Inauguration and has been rescheduled.
I personally applaud the Academy for having the foresight to avoid such a conflict of attention—some would likely have trouble deciding which to watch live and which to read in the following day’s paper. One can only imagine, though, a future in which a newly sworn-in president, filled with pride and hope for the future, would turn to his or her constituents and say: “And now, the nominees for best actor.”
Come on, think of the ratings!

Following the likes of Wal-mart, Best Buy, and Future Shop, Amazon is giving customers a $50.00 credit for any HD DVD Player bought on its site before February 23. If you were one of those that purchased from the company, you might have received an e-mail from them that stated:
“New technologies don’t always work out as planned. We at Amazon.com value our customer relationships more than anything and would like to support customers who purchased these players by offering a credit good for $50 off any products sold by Amazon.com…”
The offer stands until April 9 and the credit can be used for Blu-ray players or more HD products, many of which are up to 60% off on Amazon.

Reality Show Producer Arrested For Imprisoning Contestants

Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Editorial, News,

A reality TV producer/director has landed in his own personal episode of Cops. Police say Marc Brilleman, 33, would not let four women leave a central Florida house where his show, Pauper to Princess, was being filmed.
The show, which hasn’t been picked up by any network as of yet, is about ordinary girls hoping to work out their self-esteem, mental and physical problems by becoming “princesses”.

Another Actor Quits CSI

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, CBS, News, Rumors,
UPDATE: You can read about Dourdan’s recent drug-related arrest here.
Fans of CSI will probably have some mixed feelings about their casting lineup this fall.
The good news? Just a few weeks ago, lead player William Petersen extended his contract with the CBS show. His current deal had him on the network until next month; his new terms will have him with program through the end of the 2008-09 season.
The bad news? TV Guide is reporting that another cast member has opted against renewing his gig beyond his May expiration date. Gary Dourdan, who has starred as Warrick Brown since 2000, has informed his bosses that he will be leaving the successful franchise. This news comes one year after Jorja Fox chose to walk away as well. (Though her last air date was technically in November.)
Although it’s unclear when or how Dourdan will depart CSI, make sure you have your Tivos prepared for the season finale on May 15.

Ashlee Simpson Reportedly Pregnant

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Engagements, Pregnancies, Rumors,
I guess this calls for another round of congratulations?
According to Us Magazine, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz may have had more than one reason to get engaged. The couple is also reportedly pregnant.
The two confirmed the nuptial news last week, sometime after the Fall Out Boy star asked papa Joe for approval. (Assuming the rumor is true, I doubt the patriarch was really given much of a choice.)
I must say, this pregnancy probably couldn’t have come at a much better time for the Simpson clan. As it is, I think both Ashlee and Jessica have more than enough time in their career schedules to watch over the babe.

MONDAY (4/14)
- Bones (FOX, 8pm): New episode. “When a motorcycle racer’s remains are discovered in a national park, Brennan and Booth hunt for his killer.” I hear this is a great show. I just wish Angel wasn’t flirting with a new woman.
- One Tree Hill (CW, 9pm): New episode. “Lucas tries to deal with being left at the altar.” He’ll find comfort in the arms of a young blonde thing later.
- Rules of Engagement (CBS, 9:30pm): New episode. “Adam and Jennifer go on a vacation with Jeff and Audrey, but first they have to endure a time share sales pitch.” What do I get if I endure the show?
- Medium (NBC, 10pm): “Kelly Preston guest stars as venture capitalist Meghan Doyle, who strikes up a professional and personal connection with Joe.” Anjelica Huston, Rosanna Arquette and now Kelly Preston. Is this the Lifetime channel?

The Idols Attempt Mariah Carey

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, Gossip,
Any person with a shred of common sense knows—you shouldn’t go on American Idol aiming to sing anything by Whitney Houston, Celine Dion or Christina Aguilera. Not only will the decision set you up for comparison, it’s likely you’ll end up in a world of embarrassment.
So why then would the producers schedule a whole night dedicated to Mariah Carey? Isn’t that the last thing Randy, Paula and Simon would want the contestants to do?
During a recent exit interview, Michael Johns revealed he would have attempted a version of “Vision of Love” during next week’s show. (Of course, his early exit means we are now being spared that potentially questionable rendition.) But what does this mean for the rest of them? Which records could David Cook, Jason Castro, Brooke White or Carly Smithson possibly sing?
I’m predicting Archuleta will take on “One Sweet Day”. Make your guesses for the rest of them now!

American Idol: Shock and Awe

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial,

The pushed-back Thursday elimination night on American Idol began with a promise from Ryan Seacrest, who touted “guest stars and surprises” at the top of the hour. There certainly were some surprises, but most of them weren’t at all good.
The evening kicked off with clips of Idol Gives Back, which has so far raised more than $60 million for various charitable organizations. Next, the Top 8 Idols sang “Shout to the Lord” while a huge choir sang in the background. It was, all told, way too schmaltzy for an elimination night. But more of the same would continue throughout the evening.
