Coaches’ challenges not coming to NHL

Last week, the Florida Panthers General Manager Dale Tallon announced he wanted to discuss the possibility of implementing a coach’s replay challenge system at this week’s GM meetings in Toronto. The idea caught some air leading up to the discussion room, but it seems once the GMs got behind closed doors, Tallon’s suggestion was left out in the cold. The system would focus on goal challenges, but could be expanded to include penalty calls, missed calls, or anything else. In the end, it was just too broad.

Windows Phone 7 review round-up

Microsoft's latest foray into the mobile space, Windows Phone 7, is now for sale throughout the US. How do these new devices fare? Should you throw your iPhone or Blackberry out of the window for a brand new Windows Phone? Or is this just another device for the history books? Well, we've given you our Windows Phone 7 review (as well as a review of the HTC Surround!), but if you wanted a second opinion, here's a list of reviews to help make up your mind:
- Engadget has a very in-depth review, going point by point over every feature of the phone, along with pictures and commentaries. They refer to their initial preview, saying that "it finally has the fit and finish of a fully realized product" and "there's a lot to like or even love in WP7". At the end of their review are also links to more reviews on the individual Windows Phone devices.
- Gizmodo follows in with another slightly less extensive review, in which they conclude with their stamp of approval.
- The New York Times has a fairly short review that asks several questions such as "will these battle plans help catapult Microsoft’s latest smartphone attempt into a relevant standing in this important space" and concludes by saying that "so far the new AT&T phones seems to have everything going for them".
- Apart from the written reviews, what I typically prefer are video reviews such as this one from MobileTechReview in which they go over every feature in this very in-depth 27 mins 2-parts review. They also have videos about the individual devices.

My Kingdom for iPhone review

Chillingo, the publisher of Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, recently released My Kingdom. This MMORPG features a vast fantasy world where players can build settlements, trade, socialize, and compete. This is similar to most other games of this type out there. The innovative part however is that this world is based on your current location in the real world. For example, if you're in New York, the part of the virtual world you see around you will correspond to your physical location.

Weekend Reading: Batman, Tintin, Starlog and Jerry Bingham

A big week on the internets, so let’s get right to it.
For me, the big news is that my pal Jerry Bingham is illustrating a 5-part story in Batman Confidential, starting in issue #50 that went on sale this week. If you’re on the fence about it, here’s a multi-page preview of it that’ll make you wish Jerry drew more comics. Fans of Batman: Son of the Demon rejoice!
Batman: Over at Project Child Murdering Robot, Ricky Sprague comments on the upcoming Christopher Nolan Batman movie with some language that might be NSFW but SWR (still worth reading)! Bonus shout out to Batman: Year One: “It was among the first of the modern age comic book character reboots that now seem to occur every other year or so. Mr. Miller's hardboiled writing was at its peak, and Mr. Mazzucchelli is one of the best illustrators ever.”
Biff! Bam! Pow!: Bob Greenberger at ComicMix tackles the eternal question: Is Legends of the Superheroes any good? “You have to love kitsch, bad writing, awful acting, and comic books to enjoy (or endure) these specials.”

Google launched into the TV arena last month with their very own platform, Google TV. With it, they hope to compete with the likes of Apple TV, Roku, and of course, your cable connection. Unlike its competitors however, they haven't made a hardware device, but instead a platform which device makers can integrate into boxes which you connect to your TV, or into TVs themselves. This platform boosts to bring the best of the web and TV together, into a system where you can add features, search for shows and do so much more. But does this Google TV deliver?

Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray review

Wanna know how impressed we were with Beauty and the Beast on Blu-ray? Well, there are still plenty of folks out there who doubt that there is any real discernible difference between a Blu-ray disc and a DVD as far as looks are concerned, but we'd bet if you sat them down in front of this classic, they'd be sold immediately.

Let’s Create! Pottery review

Let's Create! Pottery from Infinite Dreams is not a new app, but it has remained rather unknown until recently when the company released the Let's Create! Pottery HD for iPad. This app is quite unique, and provides a very unusual experience. The basic premise is that you're looking at a spinning pot, which you shape with your fingers to create all sort of pots, vases and receptacles. The gestures are very intuitive, and reminiscent of working with real clay. You can make the object taller, shorter, smaller or bigger, and create all kind of rounded shapes for your works. Once you're done, you click on the firing icon and then the app will create the finished vase in beautiful 3D. The technology used to change that initial figure into a 3D vase is quite amazing.

WackyLands Boss review

Last week Chillingo, the publisher behind many popular iPhone games that was recently acquired by Electronic Arts, released yet another game for $0.99 on the App Store. The setting behind WackyLands Boss is quite unusual. Instead of playing a hero, or controlling an army, going after a boss monster, you are the boss. You get to create, customize and equip your own boss, and then go after hordes of heroes.

Jim Korkis: The Vault Of Walt Disney

Mr. Jim Korkis and I have a history that goes back to the dawn of time. His knowledge of comics and cartoon history is astounding and the number of people he's met and interviewed over the years makes Jay Leno seem like a hermit.
Back in the days of Malibu Comics, I hired Mr. K to write some text pieces and introductions to many of our comic strip reprints. They were fascinating and entertaining and I always found out stuff I didn't know – he was the pre-Google Google for certain topics. And his work would arrive many days before his deadline.
I also had the privilege of editing two big softcover books of his, written with his then-frequent collaborator John Cawley, another guy who knows more about animation than Don Bluth forgot. One book was Cartoon Confidential, one of my favorite books I ever got to work on.
The other was the Animation Art Buyer's Guide and Price Guide, which was an inexpensive book about buying, selling, pricing animation art and stuff to look for and look out for.
